Electric Vehicles EVs

  • It’s how they get such great range.

Seriously though, I obviously mean only when parked.

  • I also can’t handle big they look (even though it’s marginal compared to a model 3 no doubt)

Aren't they the same size as a new FFRR?

    Super fast tho.

  • I think they are yeah, visually they just look massive to me which for some reason I find off putting.

    They are insanely fast.

  • Taycan is only 6% longer and wider than the Model 3. All EVs are big. Got to maximise the battery area...

  • Does the model Y come with auto park as standard? And is it any good?

  • No and no.

You need EAP which is a £3,400 (!!) at order stage. It comes with:

    1. Navigate on Autopilot - takes exits on motorways for you
    2. Auto Lane Change - changes lanes for overtakes etc on motorways for you
    3. Autopark - self explanatory
    4. Summon - you can move the car backwards and forwards using the app, when you're not in the car (getting out of a tight spot etc)
    5. Smart Summon - summon the car to you from wherever it is (within a few hundred meters)

I've driven a few Model S with EAP and my 3 came with a two month trial of it.
Autopark just doesn't work. It rarely shows up and, given how good the cameras are, it's easier to park it yourself.
Smart summon just doesn't work. I think it's disabled in the EU or majorly kneecapped but it doesn't work in the US either.

Navigate on autopilot / auto lane change are super handy for long trips but not worth the outlay for the package. You can't buy them separately.

  • My wife would disagree with the above. I, on the other hand, would agree.

  • Auto park on the Volvo is nifty and does work 95% of the time. But my criticism would be that it does this relative to other cars rather than relative to the kerb... if during the process it touches the kerb (the 5% of times) it will hand control back to you, probably in a tighter situation then you would've put yourself in... mostly it's easier just to park the car yourself if you're already very comfortable with doing so.

Was helpful when the car was new and I hadn't yet got to grips with the dimensions of it.

  • Does anyone use the autopark feature on their car?

The summon feature sounds kind of useful but pretty edge case

  • I think they look really good - and the cross turismo is a decent size in the back.
But yeah very expensive and not the best range.

Tbh I’ll probably go for a model Y once @Soul gives the full review

  • Oh don’t get me wrong, they are very nice to look at.

Big cars just give me the fear (ironic given the size % from Soul on a model 3 I know and the massive old estate I drive right now).

  • Thanks, doesn’t sound great. I hate parking and am always getting into jams dinging other cars, concrete posts anything really 😅

Wonder if the Polestar has it?

Come on autonomous vehicles, hurry up

  • Honestly, I would say that the camera system on Tesla's should stop you from curbing or dinging things.

You get a very high res view of the rear and down the side of the whole car as soon as you hit reverse:

You also have ultrasonic sensors which activate at low speeds and visualise obstacles distance.

  • Come on autonomous vehicles, hurry up

The issue with the Tesla's is that when it works- it is amazing. But it seems to shit itself when a car or a pedestrian comes within 30ft. Which makes it pointless.

  • That looks good but if I get myself into a pickle, the cameras and beeps can’t save me.

Just read Volvo are coming with an electric xc90 this year, their park assist is pretty good. Doesn’t have Tesla hype factor though. I still say Tesla! If I spot one in the wild.

  • So as well as looking massive, they are ;)

Got to say large cars are a massive bug of mine. I went to the supermarket the other day and parked in the parent spot. Both cars either side were parked reasonably and it was still a struggle to get my kid out.

It's getting ridiculous. This isn't the US. We're not set up for it. None of these cars actually has proportionally more internal space.

  • I drive an XC60 and kind of agree. It’s pretty massive but isn’t actually that big inside 🤷‍♂️

  • I am in Dodge Ram pickup country. You guys are lucky, I kind of want one too though

  • I get that safety is a big part:

But I think convention and lack of imagination is a huge part. For eg if EVs don't need gears then why is there still a space for the transmission tunnel? For ICE cars, if they're all autos and getting jacked up for visibility but don't need ground clearance, why is the transmission tunnel so elevated?

  • But you can park one in a parking bay.

  • There's an old Renault 4 parked outside where I am now. In amongst the giant 4x4s of Wandsworth it looks like a toy car. I know protection and safety and all that but it's really stark when you see old cars alongside today's behemoths.

  • 8pm on a Friday night Kikburn Shell. The bmw on left isn’t even plugged in, while the mini is at 97% charging at 2kw

What the hells wrong with people?

  • Had similar at an InstaVolt last Saturday. Four bays in a multi story, 1 with an ioniq parked and not charging, another with an Audi charging, but parked so badly it was taking up two bays. Just managed to squeeze into the fourth, but two more electrics had to head off unable to plug in.

I just don’t understand the mentality. The ioniq had to pay for parking anyway, so why not just use a regular spot? Bizarre

  • In the next instalment of “reality EV charging” we learn that the mini driver was older and just totally clueless. The couple that owned the bm came back to their car clearly pissed - driver spent a few minutes obviously trying to work out why he didn’t need to unplug the charger that wasn’t plugged in in the first place, while companion propped herself up against the passenger door drunkenly apologising

    Then they drove off

  • Isn't the massive size of EVs also partially down to demand? People want bigger cars with bigger range.

To say all electric vehicles are massive seems off to me though. Most electric cars are, sure but there's stuff in the "not quite a car not quite a bike" range that is very petite. Or things like that e Honda or whatever.

Not really the meat and potatoes of this thread which should really be named "electric cars" to be fair.
