In the way we root for the crooks in some gangster flicks. He had a better life than nearly every other member of his species, being free enough to go out and actually earn the death penalty. In the end, he died a gangster's death, taken by surprise by a coward with a gun.
It's not funny, but in being a three act revenge tragedy, it is certainly a meme.
