  • I commuted into Victoria on the train for many, many years and watched the development slowly happen. Watching them remove the chimneys brick by brick was pretty impressive, and then watch them be rebuilt exactly the same was crazy. Every day I used to look and wonder how many millions it cost to do something that will go completely unnoticed in the long run.

For 35+ years of my life it was always just a crumbling shell. I moved out of London, then one day happened to get a train past it and all four chimneys were gone. It was a most odd thing to not see something that had always been there.

  • Yeah. That’s annoying. Given the sunshine today…

  • It was a most odd thing to not see something that had always been there.

I had a similar experience last time I was in driving into Newcastle. It was night and there was heavy fog on the Tyne*. Driving up to the Tyne bridge we could see the roadway, streetlights, guardrails etc near the ground where the fog was clear but not the arch of the bridge above until we were almost driving under it. It was just like it wasn't there. A very weird feeling. Made me realise how unnerving the post 9-11 Manhattan skyline would have been for the people who lived there.

(* all mine all mine )

  • Running past a hidden fog cloaked Salisbury cathedral similarly eerie

  • They were going to have a heat pump taking heat from the river at one point. Wonder what happened to that plan...

  • This is every night out I ever had in the toon.

("Toon" being used psychogeographically not strictly geographically)

  • every night out I ever had in the toon.

    Tuxedo Royale are aye pee

  • The big smog!

  • It was the Tuxedo Princess when I was up there, good times

  • Great photo!

    +1 for that

  • Commute a few days ago ended up with a flat tire half way.
By using public transport I found a nice backdrop for a picture.

  • Lovely. Jealous.

  • Stacked it on the ice this morning, literally outside my door. Popped the bike back inside, did a quick change and got the tube, sore hip but otherwise grand.

Tubes are mainly empty, but 14 minutes wait for jubilee is too long. Back on the bike tomorrow, ice or no.

  • Watford fan huh?

  • I want snow so I can get me studded tyres on.

  • I put them on last year when it snowed a little and when I actually got riding hardly any had settled and I just had a slow, shit ride in to work. Nice when there was a patch of snow or ice but not needed for 90% or the ride.

  • Nice when there was a patch of snow or ice but not needed for 90% or the ride.

Had a similar experience, maybe a bit more snow — it just seemed so great to be able to ride in snow, I want some more

  • From Stoke Newington to Earlsfield the only bit of grit I saw this morning was a few clumps on Battersea rise, other side of Clapham common.

Was it not deemed cold enough to grit today or are councils not doing it anymore? There was quite a lot of ice I thought.

  • Couple of years ago it properly snowed and the ride in was absolutely magic. Cycling over huge bits of frozen ice and snow with impunity is a wonderful feeling.
