I'll make some steaks from it, with rice and steamed broccoli. Got inspired by some of the watermelon roast recipes. The marinade is random mix of vegan fish sauce and soy sauce, spices, coconut sugar. First mistake, I did marinate it already in the shape of stakes. It reduces the water and sort of washes of the spices from it. still got to soak some of the flavours into the "flesh"

If the answer to “where do you get your protein from?” Is “McD”then I’m pretty sure you’re doing it wrong 😆
-
• #9304
you’re
Is that in 'me' or 'society'?
Just to be clear, I cannot remember when I last ate at a McD,
but certainly not this century and probably late '80s.
The point I was trying to raise, was that much that the meat-free bandwagon is offering is processed food with low protein content. -

They're made by this person. I tried the not-pork pie the other day, was pretty good. Decent pastry.

Nice, will keep an eye out for the next time they're at Levy market.

I had it two weeks ago.
I was just making fun though, but if a person goes to a fast food chain and buys ultra processed food, it’s either an informed choice and a compromise from a healthier diet or because that person doesn’t care about nutrition. Either way the amount of protein is unimportant since no one has ever been protein deficient on a non caloric restricted diet, and we should really focus much more on where people get their fibre from, or like you say, nutrients in general.

I wouldn't say the amount of protein is unimportant, even if protein deficiency isn't a concern, protein massively aids recovery from exercise and muscle building / muscle retention if losing weight. Banana blossom, jackfruit etc are great in terms of taste when treated right, but there are legit reasons to want a higher protein diet and it's annoying to me when vegan options that replicate meat flavour wise don't replicate meat nutritionally (I say this as a frequent consumer of these products).
this is why the Linda sausage is almighty // hallowed be thy Linda.

My Mrs is full of praise for the Hellmans vegan mayo. She agrees with the consensus on the McVegan too, she’s more partial to the BK version.
-
• #9310
I'm not sure if she's bothered or not but the BK version isn't technically vegan, I believe it's cooked on the same grill as their meat patties. The plant based chicken-y thing they do is cooked separately though.
-
• #9311
Yeah, she tries to stay vegan but she’s not adverse to bending the rules occasionally, thanks for pointing it out though

Biggest issue for me with the McPlant is that it's always so cold. Even if you eat it straight away, it gets cold really quickly. Maybe the toppings, but wonder if the patty doesn't retain heat the same as a meat patty does?

What's everyone's favourite chili sin carne / chili con veggie recipe?
I guess one can go either the lentil or textured soy crumble route (and I do prefer the latter to be honest).
Not trying to re-invent the wheel (frankly, I'm quite happy with my chili), just thought of making a batch again for the first time since a long while and was looking for inspirations..

I really like to use canned green lentils, just black beans or crumbled tofu. Not kidney beans though, not my favorite bean.
Bosh has two very nice recipes

Anyone happened to find any english muffins in a shop or a brand that happen to be vegan? Miss those things. Probably the cheaper end of the scale are more likely to skip the dairy.
-
• #9325
Yeah Warburton's are good and cheap and vegan.
Got this not too shabby scotch egg from the deli in 8th day, even the little fake egg has a little fake yolk and the textures we're kinda right.
