  • Recommendation for Tom’s Pasta in Hackney downs studios. 3 course meal is currently £15 & delicious. Tomato Bruschetta, Mushroom Lasagne & Dark choc & orange mousse were the vegan options. Beer/wine from All Good Beer next door too

  • Tried a McPlant today (actually did drive thru last night and received the attached picture) had to wait till today to go complain due to kids bedtime.

Burger was meh. Shan't try again.

I do really like the Aldi southern fried not chicken burgers.

  • I agree, but all McDonald’s food is meh right?. Glad it’s there to tempt the swathes of regular and irregular fast food eaters away from the dark side :)

  • McPlant

    🤮

Aldi southern fried not chicken burgers

These are pretty damn good as an actual burger.

  • Wife and I also had a McPlants today as it was all too conviniently placed between Ikea and Boots where we needed to pick some bits and bobs up.

Can also report a meh/10 score, at least in part to the burger patty being smaller/thinner than the regular beyond burgers - even for my vegetable-averse self that only had bun + burger + ketchup there just wasn’t much in the way of bite nor taste.

Almost any of the beyond-type burgers from a supermarket done at home would be preferable, not discounting any potential wider effects of the biggest fast food company in the world branching out (and pushing it a lot given the number of ads i’ve seen recently).

  • Aldi southern fried not chicken burgers.

Yes! They are amazing. With the brioche roll but not sure Aldi are doing them anymore. Sob.

  • This was probably the worst meat substitute I ever tried. Left tin of cats food, right "tuna". It didn't have strong flavour but very bad, like said above very "meh". As much as I don't like food waste I did put the tin onto the bin.

So the cat can get it? :)

  • Also, tested so you don't have to, Heinz vegan mayo. Avoid, it's crap (as you might expect). Annoyingly, this being the nature of the big brand game, it'll probably be everywhere in no time. A burger shop near me already advertises its token vegan boiger alongside a picture of the Heinz bottle.

  • This stuff is almost universally hated 😹

  • I don't really like this kind of advertorial masquerading as an article, but posting this because it's in Central London, where it's always good to know the options. It's an omnivorous company at heart, though.

  • When I want to make tuna sweetcorn, I’ll mix 2 tins of braised tofu, 1 tin of sweetcorn, couple of dollops of Mayo with about 4/5 sheets of grated nori (bit of salt n pepper too). That’ll make three pretty generous portions. with a jacket potato, salad and baked beans etc its a family fave.

You can sub the braised tofu for sorta mashed up chickpeas if you can’t find it.

  • I usually make "tuna" from Jackfruit. Boil it for some time with fish seasoning and see weed(wakame), then add the seasoning and nori cut into tiny pieces to the mayo.
This was for a quid in Asda so felt like trying something new. Now it put me off of trying things again and rather will make them myself. Currently marinating watermelon ( was for a quid in my local veg store:D)

  • Sounds banging, will give it a try.

What’re you marinating the watermelon in / for?

  • Sainsburys sell this, it's genuinely good with mayo, sweetcorn - https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/future-farm-plant-based-tuna-150g

  • quick scroll down the page and good god, uggghhh, there goes my breakfast

  • Flipside, our house really quite likes this mayo. Haven’t had egg mayo in a long time, so can’t comments about how alike they are to ‘the real thing’, but it works for us.

  • I tried the mcplant. It’s pretty average but feels nice to have the option to have an easy lunch anywhere in the country.

  • This. One day I'll be knackered or pissed in a strange town or in a motorway services (if pissed I won't be driving 🤣) and it will be an option. For this I'm thankful.

  • Also not losing my shit about the mcvegan but it's a cheap burger from McDonald's. And that's what it tastes like. Wouldn't go in expecting anything more exciting than that.

I actually think the UK one is better than the one that was being trialled in Finland when I was living there a couple of years ago.

  • Yeah, we think it's ok too. Not a patch on their vegan salad cream tho.

  • vegan salad cream

didnt know this existed. This changes everything.

  • Loathe though I am to give McB meat-free burger any further coverage,
    but,
does anyone know its protein content?
Far too many meat alternatives being offered by meat-based brands
offer only a derisory percentage of protein.

  • according to the mcd website 19g protein

  • Thanks for the quick reply.
