With a modern chainring and rear mech the keeper surely adds nothing but friction and noise to the drivetrain. Justification - I used to have one, bought cheap off ebay and used on a 1x setup where I couldn't afford/be bothered to buy a narrow wide ring or a clutched mech.
For me it just smells of a rich guy with no taste throwing expensive parts at a bike he will never ride. Youre right the keeper is completely unnecessary but its another bit of purple Paul.
