  • East Anglia is crazy flat, my commute is 22km and 48m elevation. On zwift its all about speed so i ride the flatest routes and try and do group rides, this doesn't always work as my Internet is dodgy so often I'm solo and have to push more watts to keep the speed up. On zwift i get into a numb state and just pedal. I definitely miss the summer, as i was doing it all outside.

  • The fatigue for the challenge as a whole is really settling in, I'm glad I've only got 23 days left. My bikes need so decent amount of work done but I'll get to that once I've completed this.

On another note, I've booked Redwell brewery in Norwich for 12.30pm on the 22nd if January. If anyone wants to join we'll be riding from Trowse at 10.30am for 50km or so. DM me if you want to join as it'll be nice to know numbers

  • Unbelievable effort this. Truly awe inspiring - good luck with the final push!

  • So it's day 345 and I'm sitting 17km up from the total (34,517km). I've really enjoyed the last few days as i haven't had any time pressures for the rides. Today was lovely, i puntured 3 times but the blue sky kept the motivation high.

  • This is so awesome and impressive.
Thank you for doing it, it's motivating!

Keep strong and healthy, you will do it!

  • I'm sitting on target with 17 days of this left and I've raised £5,556 so far which I'm extremely happy about. On NYE I got my Isen serviced by Pauls Cycles in Dereham which was needed as I started to do some work on it and quickly realised that the bottom bracket had completely seized and I didn't have the facilities to service the bearings. This probably explained why I was finding cycling more difficult over Christmas and why I was more fatigued than normal.

I'm worrying a lot about Covid as I've been skirting around it for a while now and so many people I know/work with have it now. The last thing I want is to get ill. There was Covid in my house at Christmas and I luckily managed to miss it, I had a negative LFT and went for a ride on the 23rd and I received a phone call from my sister to say she had a positive one so I packed up a bag and went to my girlfriends flat for the majority of the Christmas break (I continued to be negative, I also went for a PCR). Cycling was more difficult there as I didn't have all my gear, plus I did occasionally ride home to turbo as my garage is completely separate to the house. Old bottles came in handy then as there's no toilet... Anyway, I just thought I should document this above as it was quite an interesting time in the challenge where I managed to catch up to the target daily distance.

In other news, I have put an entry into GBDuro. Hopefully I get a place as I like the idea of racing over the 2,000km and it being 4x500km stages as this could suit me, it also gives me something different to train for once this challenge is completed.

  • You are amazing! thanks for the update. nearly done mate!

  • Amazing effort in here, and for a good cause none the less. Congrats!

I vaguely remember it being mentioned in the thread a while back, but now that youre almost at the end of it, whats your recovery plan like? I imagine you wont sleep off a year of fatigue in a week or two.

  • My recovery plan is to have a slow taper as I would of done roughly 24 hour weeks for 52 weeks, so I'm going to do 2 x 10 hour weeks and then have a full rest week off the bike (I'll probably walk a lot this week as I can see myself being bored). After these 3 weeks I'll start training again, my plan is to incorporate more strength work as I've done zero this year and I can feel this in my knees now.

I'm definitely interested in doing some fitness tests once I've recovered, I'll probably do the classic ramp/FTP test but I will also do 2 hours at both 130 and 150bpm.

  • That sounds like a very reasonable approach. Regarding strength work, thats what helped me with my ITB injury. There was a big imbalance in hamstring strength, and I havent had any ITB issues since I was like 14. The thing is, I've been doing at the minimum 4 sets of deadlifts 50 weeks out of the year ever since.... until I got back into cycling, and neglected the gym last year.

    Good luck with your plan!

  • Amazing effort not just to catch up and keep well on track, but to manage the issues that inevitably arisen! 👍

Also good luck with GB duro, must be exciting to look for ways to use the fitness and endurance you have built up in different ways once the inherent limitations in terms of training/recovery of the challenge will be gone!

Sent a DM re the last ride!

  • I just realised I’ve followed this for ages and donated nothing besides some probably useless worn out pedals!
Now rectified this, great work. You’ll feel better this week once you’re back in the routine.

  • Thank you, those pedals have come in very useful too be honest. I gave them a service and they've done a decent amount of kms.

    Update:
It's day 352 and I've ridden 35,224km in total. I struggled to sleep this week because of the change in routine with returning to work. This meeant that i fell 50km behind on Friday. As yesterday was very wet, I decided to spend 4.5hours on the turbo which helped to catch up. I'm feeling optimistic with finishing this challenge now. I've got a few things planned for the year and I'm looking forward to spending some quality time with friends and family.

  • time with friends and family.

Overrated. Get back on your bike.

    (jokes)

  • Well done mate, really close!

  • Going from cycling on average 100km a day to a 20 hour week training plan with 4 hours of cross training.

F+f time for the first 2 weeks off though

  • I've done about 4.5 hours on the turbo this year and that's plenty. Donation incoming.

  • Reminder of where to donate pls?

  • Sorted Ta

  • Update time:

It's day 355, the total distance is 35,510km which means i have 990km to go! I'm very happy with that.

I'm being over cautious with the weather at the moment as I'm pretty worried about coming off on the ice but apart from that the riding is going well. I've got a 4 day weekend which will be a welcome break as work has been stressful AF this week.

  • Unbelievable effort.

Must feel incredible to be down to 3 figures left.

  • Thank you, yes i feel great. I've still got a few days left but it's very satisfying to have 990km left

  • Nearly there, well done!
