Which Groupset?

With the introduction of Shimano 12 speed, can I theoretically run Sram AXS with a 12 speed Shimano cassette?

Eliminating the need for a XDR hub body.

What's the largest sprocket people have been able to run on a R7000 105 series rear derailleur? Shimano say 34t, but I suspect real world that would translate into 36-40t?

Sorry I realise I didn't mention that I was referring to the road side, with Dura Ace and Ultegra going 12 speed recently and it all fitting on standard 11 speed hub bodies.

When the original 12 speed DA press release came out, I was sure it said something about the Cassette still requiring a new type of freehub body. I’d assumed the same was true for 12 speed ultegra, but good to know that’s not the case.

I’m wondering what the difference in cog spacing between 12 speed shimano road and road axs is?

There is a small difference in the cog spacing in the 12 speed mtb stuff versus eagle axs. But in use it doesn’t seem to impact it. Like Skinny, I use a 12 speed shimano mtb cassette, chain and chainring with an mtb axs mech and it shifts better than a complete eagle axs set up.

But the road axs stuff uses a flat top chain that might not mesh well with shimano 12 speed, has anyone tried this yet?

Not tried it, but it won't work. The rollers on the flat top chain are larger than standard, I understand, so the chain won't sit properly on a Shimano cassette.

Unfortunately SRAM muddies compatibility between road/MTB due to the flat top chain they use for road.

If you want to mix Sram AXS derailleurs with Shimano drivetrain you need to use SRAM AXS Eagle MTB derailleurs - which is less ideal if you want to use on a road bike.

Can't you use the road derailleurs with a Shimano chain and cassette if you change the jockey wheels in the SRAM road mech?

Aye, this kinda the same issue with using a 12 speed shimano mtb chain on a sram chainring, some folk just go ahead and say it’s fine but I’m reality it’s not a match and you lose the full hyperglide chain retention.

This will definitely be possible, the chainrings would need to be sram too though.

I’m a bit confused about what 12 speed shimano freehubs there are for road.

So there is Microspline that arrived with the 12 speed mtb stuff.

But didn’t the original press release for 12 speed dura ace say that the cassette used a new interface that was different from microspline?

Shimano website says Ultegra and DuraAce 12 speed cassettes are backwards compatible with 11 speed freehubs and compatible with 12 speed freehubs.

So does that mean they fit onto a microspline free hub too? Or is there Road version of microspline that I can’t find?

Most importantly, the new cassettes fit both the new 12-speed specific road freehub (that currently only exists on Dura-Ace wheels) and are compatible with existing 11-speed freehub bodies (which I guess makes them 11/12-speed freehub bodies). The thickness of the cogs and spacing between them also remains the same. Shimano told me that there was always extra room in the existing freehub design for the 12th cog, especially with the larger cassette cogs being able to be cantilever further toward the spokes.

I'd say I can stick to what I received, am I wrong?

I’m not sure why, but the manual says that the e8000 chain can only be used with a single front chainring. So if you’re running 2x with a front derailleur there might be some issue with shifting.

I don’t really see how the chains are different other than the ebike chain has a supposedly more resilient coating.

Coming from mixing shimano cassette, chains, Cannondale cranks with Sram 22 I didn't realise how picky the 12 speed systems are with matching chainrings and chains.

Swapped my dolan fxe for a bombtrack arise singlespeed, but i'm finding singlespeed on wide tyres all a bit of a chore. Also (obvious as this seems in retrospect) its impossible to get gearing good for both commuting and gravel/ chilterns type stuff.

So, thinking of bolting on a 1x group (which the arise takes)- something cheap and cheerful. Came across microshift advent, either in 9 or 10 speed flavours, with an 11-48t

Anyone used it? Seems fairly common on entry level gravel bikes, so expecting something totally functional if not refined.

Prices seem steep in the UK, but very economical if I ordered from aliexpress

On and off, for the past 4 months I have been waiting for a reasonably priced SRAM 1x groupset to go on sale.
I understand that production will have take a hit due to Covid, but am I right in thinking there have been no new SRAM Apex 1 or Rival 1 groupset for sale?
Maybe I’ve been living under a rock, but that’s crazy!

Some Sram is starting to come in just now. Some parts are not due back in to stock until October.

Is there any reason a Shimano R7000 front derailleur wouldn't work with my SRAM Rival shifter?

The only way is getting bits separate. Full groups go into new bikes RN
