  • We went with wood effect (ceramic) tiles for our living room and hall and I’m really happy with them.

  • There's a new-ish plugin for Figma to do layouts and the like. Might be useful to a few folk here that use Figma: https://www.figma.com/community/file/1050189129120629069

  • OMG. My life is complete.

  • Finally finished the laundry/utility room in the loft. Pretty much every tradesman that worked on the build thought it was a bad use of space and thought we should have crammed 2 bedrooms and a little shower room up there instead of 1 master bedroom and nice bathroom and the laundry, or use the space for a walk in wardrobe.

With a 20 and 7 month I can't remember the last time I wasn't tripping over piles of washing downstairs, only been a week but it's so much better having that shit dumped in its own space. Was a proper bitch getting the machines up there though.

We moved the boiler in there as well to free up as much space as possible downstairs, as we opted not do the side return.

  • how are the vibrations when the washing machine is on with it being upstairs?

  • The machine is complete silent apart from the spin cycle at the very end, then you have an intense 5 minutes if you're in the bedroom but it's over so quick that it's not an issue.

  • intense 5 minutes if you're in the bedroom

    Sounds aright to me!

    boom boom

  • 5 minutes! Alright Sting, no need to brag.

  • 4 mins 50 longer than what I'm used to.

  • i've recently done a similar mini-utility, but hadn't really thought through the vibrations from the washing machine as it was previously on a concrete slab and is now on a suspended timber floor.
as you say it's not too bad, but certainly more noticeable than it was in its previous location.
wish i'd thought about it more before putting the flooring down though as i might have poured some concrete. oh well!

  • The place we're buying has concrete ground and first floors, good to know there are some upsides. Not looking forward to chasing pipes and cables.

  • has anyone used cork render as an alternative to traditional renders such as monocouche?
currently researching less environmentally damaging alternatives.

  • Has anyone gone down the route of renovating an existing set of units in a kitchen that clearly are custom made/not from a manufacturer?

I want to add an extra set of units that look similar, have the floor looked at/new lino, add an extractor fan, have the oven serviced, have the tops of the cabinet changed and add window into the room.

  • Anything is possible, but when I install a kitchen I don't usually prioritise how it might be taken apart and modified easily.

TBH those changes sound pretty doable. Only major stumbling block would be if the worktop is bonded to the cabinets as opposed to just screwed.

  • We got something similar to this to go between the washer and dryer.
Really helps when putting stuff into and out of the dryer especially for the more vertically challenged.
We had units built around ours though so not sure if it would work as you have it currently.

  • Can you feel vibrations at any time other than the spin cycle? I was amazed at how quiet the miele is, honestly apart from the spin cycle at the end you don't know it's even on. But yeah I didn't think about it at all tbh and wouldn't have minded a solution. I did find that miele recommended screwing a plywood base to the joists and putting the machine on that to reduce vibrations.

I'm very rarely going to be in the bedroom when the machine is on and although my wife has her office in the loft bedroom now she says it doesn't bother her.

  • I was looking at one of those but the room has a step in it about 1m high so I built a plinth and set the dryer back, makes a natural shelf on the washer just about big enough for a basket.

  • no, it's fairly silent apart from the spin cycle - it's an LG thinQ with all the smart stuff built in - connects up to the TV so you can see how long it's got left and sends you a text when it's finished etc. all very high tech! :D

when it's on 1400 spin it's quite vibratey, but we've been using it on 1200 and it's not too bad.

should have secured the flooring down but i didn't even think about it at the time.
    never mind, eh?

  • Ha, mine has a fairly ropey app but tv sync is some next level tech I can get on board with 😂

There does seem to be quite a jump from 1200 to 1400 on mine as well.

should have secured the flooring down but i didn't even think about it at the time.
    never mind, eh?

My wife has taken a philosophical view on all of our cock ups that they're mistakes we won't repeat on our next (and hopefully final) house.

  • tv sync is some next level tech I can get on board with

it's completely pointless IMO. however, if there was a camera inside so i could watch my undies spinning at 1200rpm...

  • Delicates live. A very British TV channel!

  • FYI you can get anti vibration mats and coasters.

  • Any news on that basket weave parquet source @hugo7?
