Lightweight tent recommendations?

  • Always worth checking out Blacks/Millets/Ultimate Outdoors. They are Exped stockists, and quite often you can get mental deals with their generic deal codes.
(https://www.millets.co.uk/15985275/exped-ultralight-air-pillow-15985275) for under £20. Though, the pictures are always of them full of air, which you shouldn't do for comfort.

  • I have one of these, its good

  • Awesome, thanks for the heads up

  • jan10 is the current code for Millets, not sure if it's obvious on the site.

  • Just spent a few weeks bicycle touring around Gran Canaria

Did you get the official permit for wild camping, did it take long to get it if so?
I was thinking about Canaria as an option for a one week trip but suspected the bureaucracy might take all of that and went to Valencia instead. Which was great.

  • We tried to get the passes, but they've suspended it for the time being due to covid. In practice though, we had zero issues camping either in designated spots (which are publicly funded and free to the user, and have drinking water etc) or in 'wild' spots.
    Valencia is also great!

  • Hey anyone tried the Naturehike Force UL2?

  • Ok thanks, indeed I've heard of others going without the pass with no problems too.

  • So the Phantom Phreak tent has arrived, and looks to be in decent shape. The tape on the seams is predictably buggered, however - what’s the forum approved seam sealant? Gear Aid and Stormsure seem to be the most widely available options.

  • Which ever is the pu one.

  • Cheers! On closer inspection the tent is less useable than it first appeared so won't be getting the sealant treatment after all - back to the seller it goes...

  • @platypus do you own a 3F UL2? Saw your recommended it in a couple of places. I'm quite tempted by the pro version for summer plans.

  • nope, I use a:
single person, enclosed - SMD Deschutes Tarp (floorless)
up to four, trees needed - MYOG 20d 3mx3m flat tarp
both with a lightweight Tyvek groundsheet.
If I wanted to go to tree-less areas with one other person, I'd buy a 3f Ul2.

  • Cool, thanks! Will report back here if I do get one.

  • Any recommendations for a light ish 4 man tent? Bike packing on cargo bike, so doesn't need to be mega light, maybe 4kg ish...

  • I've not got direct experience of the 4-person, but my Lanshan 1 is OK. Maybe summat like this?

  • I have a Big Agnes Tumble 4 which I rate, and have bikepacked with

  • Finally used my 2 person Copper Spur last night in Joshua Tree. Slept in it by myself and it was great. Two people would be… snug. BUT, super easy to put it up even with 40mph gusts. It was 0° and snowing overnight and it did well. Holy shit the Tyvek ground sheet I made was loud as fuck in the wind though….

  • Tyvek will quieten down with use.

  • Put the Tyvek through the washing machine, softens it up.

  • Some more nights in the trekker tent phreeranger and I’m still happy with it.
The good points: stands up well to wind, rain, snow, pretty much all the weather! Also very easy to pitch and packs up small, light too.
The bad points: quite a bit of condensation on this trip, some drips in the night but as I was using a bivvy bag and sleeping bag combo due to the cold this wasn’t a massive issue. It’s small! I’m 5’11 and with full winter kit, there’s not a lot of space. Still managed to cook in the porch and store everything but if I were on a longer trip (this one was 3 nights) I’d want more room.

  • Thanks for the Tyvek tips!

  • Good to hear, yet to use mine in anger. Booked in for wild use mid-march. I went for the Big Agnes ground sheet, no interest in making something like that.

  • It was super easy but I get it. The Tyvek at $8 seemed a better deal than ground sheet at $80!

  • Hello, I'm after a bit of advice, not the lightest of lightweight tents but what would you go for? A Vango Scaffell 300+ or a Vango Pulsar Pro 300? Both about the same weight it seemd that the Pulsar has a fly made from rip stop and has a 5000 rather than 3000 hydrostatic head.

I have a Vango Halo 300 but need something with a bigger vestibule area hence looking at these two which are both available at the £150 mark.

    Any thoughts appreciated.
