Super useful insights, thanks. Yeah, the HS7s are ok, and I’ve used them for years, but I know they’re not as good as Genelecs - if I’m making mixing decisions I always put headphones on. I have a very good pair of Audeze planar ‘phones and they are just a totally different ball game to the monitors. Hoping a pair of 8020s or 8030s can bring some of that clarity/separation. Though given that I’m quite volume restricted at home it’s not been a priority. I justified the cans thinking that more expensive monitors wouldn’t get enough use.
EXACTLY the same issue I had. I was using a pair of focal alphas (same size subwoofer as your HS7s - 6.5 inches) which were great but just entirely too big for a spare room. I moved to the 8020s and my mixes improved fivefold within weeks. No more guessing at frequencies, no more having to check mixes on multiple systems for problems I couldn't hear on the biggies, just...clarity. Can't recommend 'em enough.
My only advice would be - if there's any chance you might want more bass response, consider going with the 8030s straight off the bat - I always thought I'd get a sub to go with my 8020s but I don't really have the room for it, whereas the 8030s are so much less of a space / money investment than a separate sub.
