I've done a few things using a manual Singer 99K - works fine with Gutterman upholstery thread and up to 4 thicknesses of cordura, also with pvc, and for attaching / modifying webbing straps.
It wouldn't be suitable for high turnover, but I've been satisfied with my own limited efforts so far.
