I've used silly overpowered Bafang with 10 speed shimano mountain bike drivetrain (without any shifting sensors) and not had any issues. Chain wear hasn't really been much of an problem over a standard leg-powered bicycle.
I think most people who have problems have little mechanical sympathy and/or experience of riding a regular bicycle.
