  • Dunno if you guys have BFI Player on Prime Video but I've been working my way through the Kurosawas. Obviously Throne of Blood and Hidden Fortress and Yojimbo and stuff are all great, but there's also High And Low which is a modern (well, 60s) crime procedural based on a pulp novel by Ed McBain which is just amazing. Properly, properly tense and pulse quickening. The exact opposite of its remake (Ransom with Mel Gibson in the 90s) despite sharing almost the same story.

Also we watched The Discreet Charm Of The Borgouise by Luis Brunel. I may be a philistine but I had absolutely no idea what the hell was going on, but I did lol a lot. It's got Vincent Cassel's dad in it too and as soon as you know he's in it it's absolutely obvious who he is.

Oh one final BFI recommendation, Alphaville by Jean Luc Besson - a pulp detective from 30s LA is transported for some reason into an alien world where a 1984 style dictatorship reigns supreme to the detriment of love, creativity, and the human spirit - even though it's an alien world it's filmed in Paris in the 60s. You see the birth of Blade Runner in it. It's amazing. Had a bit less time for Breathless, though it looked impossibly cool, but I suspect it might benefit from a re-watch.
