I was slightly obsessed with edIT back in the days and read up a lot of interviews with him. That Crying Over Pros album was done using Reaktor and a laptop - he built his own glitch machine in Reaktor to mess with the original MIDI tracks he wrote. NI now sell prebuilt glitch machines for Reaktor -the Tim Reaper one is excellent.
Anyway the reason I mention it is if you decide to go down the NI controller route, they come with a basic version of Reaktor and Ableton, and you can easily upgrade your NI software to either get the full suite or just half-inch the glitch machines you like.
