Definitely dig through citizens eco drive range. If you stay away from promaster series there are some smaller options. Not sure about gold tho....

I know. :)
My first thought for that kind of functionality with an analogue display was Seiko Astron, but the ones with the full day/date/etc are over 42mm. There are some tasteful 39mm time & date ones though, eg:

GPS sync, solar, you basically never need to touch it. I suspect it might not be what your dadâs looking for though!

You don't have to go the radio/solar/quartz route, there are a few perpetual calendar mechanical watches which aren't over ÂŁ5 grand new. E.g. this 39mm Montblanc
https://www.chrono24.co.uk/montblanc/montblanc-heritage-spirit-perpetual-calendar--id7021736.htm
If the size could be up to, say, 42mm, the choice would be a bit bigger. E.g. Frederick Constant.
Or this 41mm Glashutte:
What about second hand? E.g. a Movado 1881, 39mm:

Happy Christmas Eve!
I've taken the starp off and gone for a stretchy NATO, wears much easier.
Wouldn't mind trying a slim case back on the SKX to get the profile down a little more.

I have a watch that uses the time only version of this as the based unit. Although I'm sure it's smaller, worth saying the tapers and profile mean it doesn't wear large. Idk if the movement is modified beyond whatever FC do but it keeps good time.

One thing to note is that there are subtle differences in batteries. I stuck a new battery in my Seiko, worked for a couple of days, then nothing. Assumed the movement was shot (it's 30 years old) and stuck it in a drawer. Someone here was asking about issued Seiko chronos (my watch has a derivation of the same movement with a flyback hand added) and I did a quick Google search and discovered that my watch needed a very specific battery.
Have a great Christmas all

Thanks! It has a needlessly complex set of functions and I still love it 30 plus years on.

Oh yeah to add, buying from a reputable dealer that has proper warehouses and storage gives a better chance of having a battery that lasts the right amount of time. If they're stored in the cold for too long they lose charge
