I have a watch that uses the time only version of this as the based unit. Although I'm sure it's smaller, worth saying the tapers and profile mean it doesn't wear large. Idk if the movement is modified beyond whatever FC do but it keeps good time.
You don't have to go the radio/solar/quartz route, there are a few perpetual calendar mechanical watches which aren't over £5 grand new. E.g. this 39mm Montblanc
