My first thought for that kind of functionality with an analogue display was Seiko Astron, but the ones with the full day/date/etc are over 42mm. There are some tasteful 39mm time & date ones though, eg:

GPS sync, solar, you basically never need to touch it. I suspect it might not be what your dad’s looking for though!
