I've only been twice, I think; the first time, Jan was very friendly and helpful, and I think the second time I mainly chatted to @Harry.Major, so I have no idea how their 'reputation' first arose, but it's safe to say that in the Great Fixie Boom of 2007+, it was a seller's market, and very different to today. There weren't many people who imported the choice bits that aspiring fixie-skidders wanted, there were few Internet sites you could order from, and AFAIR BLB imported some stuff that nobody else imported. (That may be bollocks, by the way, just AFAIR.) I imagine it may also have been a bit more stressful. It's a very different environment today. By now, BLB must have fairly vast experience of what works, so that has to be an advantage.
