  • About 30 years ago, through a letting agency, we rented two rooms in what used to be the servants quarters at the far end of a down-a-heals 'posh' house on the outskirts of one of London's many dormitory towns. About a month after we moved in, one Sunday afternoon in late autumn we were invited to the big house for tea and cakes. It turned out that we were tenants of a life peer and emeritus prof at the local university. A most most bizarre hour or so followed. We all tried to find things to talk about where we had any common reference point at all - we failed, but in the most civil of manners. The memory that stayed with me, that encapsulated the otherworldliness of their lives to us, was his frankly tasteless maroon monogram slippers. I was baffled, why did he needs his initials on his shoes - in case he forgot who he was? To make sure that those who were allowed gaze on this toasty feet never forgot who he was (it clearly worked)?

Anyway, it appears that such things are still available through gentleman's tailors, a snip at only £350. And I'm still baffled as to why - just why? It's not even an easily legible font.

  • Initials are pretty lame but I have a hankering for the similar Tricker’s leather lined slippers with a lion emblem.
