It’s hard to say. The earliest known reference to a clam is from 1570. A merchant made reference to one in what would now be considered a postcard, written to his cousin, a cleric. By this time, they were a globally traded commodity which makes it hard to tell if they were caught and eaten in Ancient Rome to any degree.
What, they didn't have clams in Rome?
