Most likely, and they should have spelled out clearly that the knee is very unstable in that case. Unfortunately not all doctors are gifted with communication skills. If you need it answered clearly, email/write to them and ask what grade the tear is; grade 3 is complete rupture.

Confirmation of an ACL tear yesterday.
IF it was torn in half, would they hospital have used different terminology like, rupture?
My ACL is "torn".
