  • Would appreciate some tips on this, I've tried Googling and can't distinguish between advertorials and genuine recommendations.

I have two external hard drives filled with TV shows and films, I'd like to back them both up to a third external drive.

As I watch things I delete them from the drive.

What would be the best software so that, say, once a quarter I could mirror the current contents of the two drives - adding new things and removing those I have watched and deleted.

    I'm using Windows 10. Thanks!

  • I agree. Especially as it's liquid cooled. CBA with that shit.

  • Was thinking about an additional drive but would I really need one? This is purely for a sim racing rig. It will only be used for racing games and attached to a racing rig.

I think 2TB should be enough and I can always add another M2 drive if needed.

  • This looks like a pretty good config deal (around £400 off)...

    Thoughts?

  • I keep seeing reviews about how shit the cooling is in Alienware machines.

  • way too much money for a 3070 and 512 ssd

  • Not sure if the config pulled through but, with a 3080, 1tb NVME (+1TB hdd) and liquid cooling, it's £2,188.

I can't find the 3080 for much less than £900 so it seems like a decent price all in...

Question is whether I'll get CPU bottleneck

  • Seems roughly £300 cheaper than Scan, like for like.

  • My super fast new pc from pcspecialist has just arrived (subject of extensive dithering in this thread over last few months) . Excitement undermined by having tested positive for covid this morning so am confined to bedroom and unable to actually connect it to a monitor. But sure it'll be great when I can.

  • I've used this in the past
    http://dimio.altervista.org/eng/dsynchronize/dsynchronize.html
had some foibles but was good once properly set up.

  • So, final stock bought option...

    1. Unlocked Intel® Core™ i7-11700KF Processor
    2. 32 GB RAM
    3. 1TB SSD (PCIe)
    4. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 12 GB

I can get it for £2,350 with vouchers from work.

    Thoughts?

  • Would not buy.

It's a nice machine, good components.

But the motherboard. The motherboard is a generic from Lenovo and whilst packaged nicely it really doesn't offer much in the way of expansion in the future. A solitary USB-C which may not be Thunderbolt, a solitary PCIE... if this machine fits your requirement now and for always, then great... but my mistake in buying a HP Omen (it was a whim purchase, I don't regret it for how I bought it) has ultimately come down to the lack of expansion capability... I cannot even take the USB-C dock that I use on the Mac or Thinkpad and plug it into the HP Omen due to the lack of full support for Thunderbolt, etc.

For me... I'd rather compromise the amount of RAM, the disk, etc... in favour of a system with a good motherboard and great CPU and pretty good GPU. A good motherboard is the longevity and usefulness of the machine IMHO.

I should qualify this... I am actually really happy with my HP Omen. I just have buyers regret that I didn't spend more time researching and think more about the motherboard and the details of that.

  • I get you but this will be purely used as a sim rig. With the exception of adding another M.2 drive (motherboard has three slots apparently) or a SATA SSD, I'll be leaving it alone.

Cost of CPU, GPU, RAM & SSD is roughly £2,150 without motherboard, case, cooler, build etc so it's £200 for all of that to be included with a warranty.

    Feels like a solid deal.

  • With that context... bargain. Buy it already :D

I generally don't have a clear purpose for the lifetime of a machine, with the exception of a NAS or something... and regretted having my future options for the machine I got narrowed by the motherboard.

But as you have a clear purpose... do it already :)

  • vouchers from work.

Is this something specific to your workplace? I think I've read about something akin to cycle scheme for computers, my employer doesn't run one. The main reason I want a new computer is to upgrade my profession skills in my free time.

  • For this particular machine, it's available at curry's and I get 8% off through our work benefits scheme.

We also do a computer purchase programme through salary sacrifice but that's really only for more standard things like MacBooks etc. Again, it's a company specific benefit. Nothing govt related etc.

  • I bought the same one a year ago with a 3070 for £1500. It's been good so far but needed a firmware update initially or it would crash every game after a while.
Temperatures are good but not very quiet on full load.

  • I'll take a look, thank you.

  • That didn’t take long…

  • If I wanted to buy a displayport cable, today, in North/East London, any suggestions?

  • lol

I can't claim to understand the tech, but surely digital is digital so this is snake oil?

  • Currys/PC World/Carphone/Carpet Warehouse?

  • Yep. Digital is receiving the 1 or 0 or not.

Tempted to troll the Audiophile thread with this one...

  • Tempted to troll the Audiophile thread

The audiophile thread knows perfectly well that if the FIFO buffer in front of the DAC doesn't run empty, the digital job is done, and they are currently taking the piss out of people who buy $5k analogue devices
