A shim is an admission that someone lacks the courage of their convictions. Like when people cut a donut in half and try and save the rest for later.
^ that makes no sense but someone in the office today cut a donut in half and left it in the box and it's kind of upset me but it may be because I'm hungover

Me neither. But Maj is on rim brakes etc. No reason a 1" aheadset and shims to modern components should be problematic.
