  • True enough, but I suppose registration is about as much of an issue with separation halftone screens as it would be with any other approach. I’ve definitely seen plenty of halftone screen printed t shirts, but I’ve never done it myself. I’ve done CMYK halftone prints, but they’ve been on paper, with a perforated vacuum bed to keep everything nice and registered.

  • CMYK halftones rely on transparent inks. Screen printing ink is opaque.

  • Screen printing ink is opaque

That's not true. You can screen print with various pigments and mediums, with varying degrees of opacity.

  • Fair enough, my fabric screen printing experience was fairly limited.

  • How fine the screen mesh is plays a large part in opacity too - a coarser mesh will allow a larger volume of ink through, resulting in a higher opacity (basically a thicker layer of ink).

  • Any reason (other than aesthetical) to cut a chain shorter than the length required to clear the pulleys on small + small rings? All I can think of is increasing tension and potentially reducing chain slap.

  • I’ve been thinking of doing the opposite, cutting it longer to reduce the chain tension in big-big. I never ride small-small, but often ride big-big. So would love to know the best chain length optimised for that ratio.

  • On some derailleurs the chain tensioner is designed to move the upper pulley closer to the cassette when the chain is slack, to put it closer to the small cogs for better shifting. If you have too long a chain it might not work as intended.

This may make sod all difference in practice.

  • "full spectrum" daylight lamps / tubes etc. -

..looking for lamps (ideally T8 tubes) that mimic actual daylight, for painting images at home in the winter season.
So it's not just about getting a bulb which is 5600K or whatever, but about getting something that delivers a "full spectrum".

After quite a lot of googling I have found

    • these lamps seem to be expensive as fuck
    • these lamps seem to be needing a lot of energy (compared to regular tubes)

Could somebody suggest some lamps that are moderately priced, maybe explain whether LED-based full spectrum lamps are actually working (and worth the money)?
It's not about a little desktop lamp but rather giving light to a bigger workspace; so need about the equivalent of 2-4 regular T8 tubes.

Thanks in advance for any help!

  • What you're looking for are High CRI leds. Colour Rendition Index. Not to be confused with the temperature 2800k, 3800k, etc.

You should be looking for 95+ for CRI

Yeah, that's basically a combination of physics and economics that you can't get around. You're always going to trade efficiency for colour fidelity, because LEDs and gas discharge lamps have their highest efficiency at one wavelength and then you have to do tricks to broaden and shape the spectrum. Since very few people are bothered once CRI goes above 50, and of those 90% will be more than happy once it hits >80, the market for any kind of lighting with super high fidelity (CRI>95) is small and can only be served by specialised products which are inherently more costly to produce than simple basic ones, regardless of economies of scale.

You can get full spectrum fluorescent T8 (CRI=98) for about a tenth of the price of equivalent LED, and although they are only half the efficiency of LED, you can still buy quite a few kWh for the difference in capital cost. LEDs have other benefits besides just higher efficiency, but they are not really relevant to lighting a painting studio,

  • Thank you for the quick replies @Airhead and @gbj_tester I appreciate it 👍

  • looking at bits for my singular peregrine which is on order. eying up some middleburn ro2s to run 2x and will run a grx rear mech. What bcd spider do i want to ensure i'll be able to easily get 30ish & 46ish t chainrings? They do 110, 94 and 130 bcd double road spiders or a 110/58 BCD one.
if I go 110 I can get these

    cheers

edit - do 9/10 speed chainrings work okay on 11s or do you definitely need 11s specific?

  • I've used a 94 spider and TA rings to get that sort of setup before and would recommend that over the other options.

The rings you've linked have a weird mounting system to get the 30t to fit. 33t is the smallest ring you can fit on a 5 arm 110 bcd pattern with regular chainring bolts. Had a look around and they have "solved" this by tapping smaller screws into the 30t ring directly.

Edit: many edits after looking for some images online

  • Sweet thanks! Have dropped the manufacturer an email too to ask, though they'll probably want me to buy their chainrings

  • middleburn ro2s

    Why, if I may ask?

  • Not set in stone, what would you go for?
Bike shop I'm going through stocks them, they look to be good quality/future proof and suit the build

  • what would you go for?

Square taper, boutique and expensive? Spécialités TA Carmina!

On a more serious note, for ST I think I'd just buy a Sugino from Spa Cycles. There's also the Lolo FC-6703 Conversion ™ but I'm not writing that post again.

  • Square taper, boutique and expensive?

    R02 isn't square taper.

I'm guessing he favours those over some random Taiwanese 24mm crankset because they're almost as good as FSA/RPM/SRAM/whatever and only 4 times the price 🙂

  • Was there someone 'on here' who ran a champagne delivery service? any ideas on how to order?

  • We have a small grower Champagne vineyard - more information here: lasseaux.com

EU orders straight from the website
UK orders via me however I am out of the country until Christmas day but can fulfill orders for NYE.

  • I usually make Christmas cards for my family members every year, but I would like to do them digitally this time (usually they are paper collages). Is there anywhere that will do good quality, matte prints on cardstock and in batches of one?

  • Apologies to all concerned. Sugino OX901 then?

  • There was just an advert on the radio encouraging me to not stick fat or other food waste down the drain which seems reasonable enough. But if you should never put food waste down the drain why do waste disposal units exist?

(we have one put in by the previous owners)
