  • It's not a photo I took below, but a screenshot of a television series*, the colours just amazed me, and reminded me of how I miss not only analogue photography but also movies, series, etc. shot on actual film.. probably preaching to the choir here but I really do prefer stuff like that over some over-processed stuff in 8K ultra-HD..

﹡ receive 200 rep points if you can tell which one (actually this would be a nice idea for a thread)

  • The Internet says its The Wire.
I don't see anything that special but we actually only get to see the best of film because of digital intermediates and remastering.

  • The Internet says its The Wire.

hey, congratulations on successfully googling the image 👍

we actually only get to see the best of film because of digital intermediates and remastering.

..you could basically say the same about all film photography that has been scanned / edited in photoshop etc. and be right about it.
still a lot of people apparently enjoy the different look and feel of the images produced that way 🤷

I don't see anything that special

well (no offense) I guess some people do and some people don't

  • Yeah definitely the case with still photography and that's what makes film great but the image you posted already has that clean modern digital/neutral look.
Which is not far off what you get from an Arri Alexa with just the default lut.

  • Could the Arri capture the “green ray” though? A friend of mine likes to go and see films the were shot & then projected in 35mm at the cinema, joined him a few times & the colours do seem to be a bit richer / deeper looking imo.

  • the image you posted already has that clean modern digital/neutral look

gotta say to me it does not look digital / neutral at all, but very rich and smooth and, well, analogue - which is why I posted it, basically

  • I am not disputing that film is different just that the image posted looks already very close to digital because the late film stocks were already being optimized for digital post processing.
When I think of what makes film special I think of something else

    https://images.static-bluray.com/reviews/8489_5.jpg

Also the green Ray isn't really visible in the 240p example above so I had to look it up and I guess most of the new examples are shot on digital.

  • My point is you would have a very hard time to hit those grays with an analogue workflow consistently.

  • this is quite cool to see, a new remastered version of a music video from 1997 vs the original TV version.
