  • It’s taken a good 18 months and a lot of patience but keeping an eye on classifieds and swooping in on bargains has paid off. So here’s my Rosebikes Xeon Team Cgf (2016):

    (Note the shitty spray.bike job)

This is how I rode it for a couple of months before the shifters finally died and I got really tired of arriving at work with a wet arse.

So after a long hard think I decided to try something relatively drastic (whilst updating the rest of the bike to 6800 because, more bargains). Enter 10mm m5 threaded alu ‘connecting rods’ and 24hr araldite:

Wait overnight for a cure, abrade bonding surfaces and then this stuff:

Another full cure, lazy sand and paint got me this far:

Some sloppy gloss, (was actually going well until Fizzgig the cat investigated the drying gloss and fucked it up with dust and fur) some (lots) of swearing and I’m finally here:

Bike is bike shaped, now onto the unenviable task of internal cable routing, mudguard fettling and sundry tasks to be discovered as I progress.

  • Fishy bikes thread yeah.

  • Yes! Love bodging on eyelets and mounts myself, this looks very decent.

  • Sweet! Any examples?

  • Beginning of this thread:
    https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/318013/

Some glueing happened but mostly brazing

  • I remember this thread! Epic

  • Well shit. These felt really strong with my test bonds, and really stood up against being ripped off with grips, however the torsion force of tightening an m5 enough to hold a mudguard eyelet properly failed. Each one cleanly twisted free leaving a clean hole.

I’m thinking superglue at this point seeing as the fit is tight. Let’s see what happens.

  • Man these close ups make this look way shoddier than irl.

  • Huh. Disappointing. So basically the fault comes from no grip between insert and glue. Maybe some serrated inserts would work ? But you'd have to redo everything. Or the insert should actually be without threading and used with a bolt+nut

  • Well seeing as I plan on commuting on this tomorrow I’m gonna try glue for today and see what happens. I’d like to avoid using a bolt if possible but may have to be pragmatic….

  • yes it wouldn't be not the most satisfying, but you can find poncey thin ones :)

  • Just sand the insert a bit, clean everything and then use epoxy glue

  • Right I gripped an eyelet and made some scores along the outside using a pair of snips and tapped it back in with some loctite superglue. If this doesn’t work I’ll drill out the threads and use a nut and bolt.

  • Seems to be holding! Might just get some longer m5s and just use a nut anyway, for the sake of peace of mind.

  • Missed this. Didn’t have any to hand so used superglue, easy enough to clean up with acetone if it doesn’t hold.

  • If it doesn’t work post the dimensions and I’ll if there is room I’ll turn you some with a knurled outer on my lathe. I’m away this week so it will be next weekend

  • This brings a tear to my eye.

  • Aaaah really? Amazing offer, thanks! I’ll update here of course.

  • Right so these failed completely, I tried and failed. Next plan: break out the polymorph:

I recon the araldite was simply to brittle to take the abuse, and was always going to crack and fracture. There needs to be some shock absorption or a softer material. So I’ll rubber cement these on and follow up with a couple of cable ties. Not as elegant as I’d planned but fuck it. I’ll always settle for function over form if I can’t get it to work aesthetically. Follow up to come.
