Yeah for sure. I had a much easier time during Transiberica. Even knowing some super basic shit is better than only knowing "dos cervesas por favor". I booked one hostel place over the phone and knew stuff like "ahora" and "aqui" and "mas tarde" and "siete" and essentially enough to convince the woman to send her son over to let me in and take my money :)
