  • @Trunkie This is frustrating because to me there seems to be no reason why you can't just stick a suitable beam in there without columns. Possibly because the resultant brick pier on the outside corner might not be sufficient to take the load? Or possibly the work take you within 100mm of the party wall and he wants to spare you needing an award?

I've counted bricks to guessimate the width of the offshoot as 3m, so with a new opening width @ 2.6 it might be one of these things.

Phone him up and ask why the beam can't sit directly on the masonry, and ask if it's one of the above, he'll probably not like being questioned, but it's his own fault for not giving better advice.

DW about BC - you can always re-submit the SE calcs before/after the work is done. Only a small job.

  • Thanks. We're having a 450mm pier on the party wall side, not a column, so no need for an agreement. I wondered if the column is needed on the return side to give the return wall something substantial to tie to?

I'll speak to him but I imagine all the overpeccing is purely to cover his back in the event of the worst.

  • I imagine that's probably it. Quite a lot of load coming down directly on the corner. Might be worth seeing how much smaller you'd have to make the window before you could omit the column. If its 100 - 150mm you might decide it's worth it.

  • Any recommendations for a small sofa (185cm max width) for our living room? The deeper the better and bonus point for a chaise longue option. Budget is £2.5k max and we've currently got our eyes set on a Swyft Model 03 one which fits our criterias

  • Hay Mags but maybe with wide arms it won’t work

  • SÖDERHAMN w/no arms is 186cm - p.deep and v.comfy sofa. it's a modular system too so can probably join a single seat to a chaise section

  • Maybe the Cinema Sofa by Lammhults?
    https://www.lammhults.se/products/easy-chairs-sofas/cinema
    https://clippings.com/products/cinema-sofa-1321060

    Dimension Measurement
    Width 160 cm
    Depth 75 cm
    Height 78 cm
    Armrest height 61 cm
    Seat height 42 cm
  • Could be a shout, they sell this version which would fit the bill, might go try it out: https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/soederhamn-2-seat-sofa-with-chaise-longue-viarp-beige-brown-s29305755/

  • you can get aftermarket covers (from bemz) if you don't like the stock options. easy enough to change the legs too, for a nicer look.

  • That's quite cool and also helps with longevity, I may actively at a stretch be able to squeeze the 3 seater in there

  • Just realised I never replied to this. I had a chat with the SE and we managed to reduce the beam to a 150x90x24 C section with a 180 bottom plate, sitting on a 100x100 column offset into the corner of the pier/side wall. So a good result all round.

Next question - I was planning on having a shadow gap instead of skirting but I've missed the boat as the plastering has already been done. Does anyone have any suggestions of finishes between tiled floor and plastered walls? I'm quite keen to avoid skirting boards if possible as I just find them so vanilla and 'expected'. I have a feeling just butting the tiles up to the wall will feel a bit unfinished?

  • They are pretty decent in use. I use a floorstander for my record deck and it came with a free small one that's decent. They are very nice for reading, dimmable and quality light with a decent cri. Good if you're into prints/drawing etc.

Apologies, massive dredge, not seen the thread for a while!

  • I just find them so vanilla and 'expected'

Do you think you'll ever mop or hoover the floor? There's a reason skirting boards are 'expected'. You could have a low skirting made from cut tiles to match the floor if you want to minimise the material palette.

  • Looking for some inspiration for decorating the interior of my home office log cabin. It is currently whitewashed walls with wooden shelving. Would like to introduce some coluur, but most examples online seem to just keep bare wood walls which i'm not a massive fan of.

  • I quite like this type of block colour thing - if you imagine the island is a desk with shelving behind it painting it all the same matching colour could look good

  • log cabin

All I can see in my head is

  • Ha! Or...

    Just sayin

(Don't open the trapdoor to the basement, dude!)

  • judging by the scale of Sam’s other projects…

  • I did have a log burner in here, but took it out as it took up too much space.

Sadly mine is nowhere near as grand or homely as that, it sadly looks more like @c00ps picture...

  • If only!

This is a paltry 7m x 4m, and just the one storey...

  • Is that Huguet ceramics?

  • this gave me a THE SHINING vibe...

  • Didn't mean to be disparaging. 'Log cabin' always makes me think horror movies!

  • Not really what you asked but you could go for a Shaker vibe. Then just have one thing - like your desk - in a block of dark rich colour.

It'd be a way of keeping it minimalist (for work/focus) but not to brutal, plus a nod to the fact that it's a log cabin.
