I feel like I'm taking on the forum mascot here but I'm happy he's not learnt to ride a motorbike, at least we don't have to listen to to his pipe dreams in that thread.

digging 30+ holes
I think there are some contributors to this thread today who have the requisite skills ;)
How big is this shed? 30+ sounds like a lot.
Didn't Ali Dymock use something like 9 or 12 brick plinths? I thought the concrete tubes replaced those, so surely you're looking at a similar number.

You'll notice I've not had to resort to insults yet, and I say yet because you're the one with a target on his back and you put it there.
You can't go around telling people they are challenged by your abilities and that's why they're mean to you. It says way more about your insecurities than anyone else.
And believe, I'm not going anywhere and I've only just started.

I have no idea. I have aggregated some of the ground screw calculators to get to that number. Shed will likely be 18' x 12' and a lot of timber. Maybe.
Edit: ground screws on 3ft centres would mean 35 screws. Not sure how you calculate for piers, especially if suspended off threaded bar on top as suggested.

Finally waited till its winter and pissing down to insulate my studio. I was gonna use rock wool and think ply over the top any other suggestions?

Are you running joists at 12ft length rather than 18ft? You'd end up using a lot more joists that way.
*A larger number of joists, not necessarily more wood, which could drive up the number of screws? -

Why doesn't my local supermarket sell plain old popping corn? Only disgusting microwavable bags.

I did point out this possible flaw in the plan...

'cause it is really shit? Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose all have it.

Good point. My napkin sketch has them at 12ft lengths, only because that feels right to me. 18ft lengths would (again, only in my mind) need more noggins, so could end up requiring more timber.

@hugo7, I've been having similar thoughts about courses but not sure how much of a commitment I could make so I'm going to go for a two-day toe dipper here, https://www.newschooloffurniture.com/
I'm reasonably competent but figure it would at least hone skills and maybe spark something.
Good luck with your next step.

The pondering made me go to Fulham Timber and price it up. For 12ft joists plus a bit extra for noggins and the invariable cockups. It's about £300 for the frame timber. Which I'll need to add to the cost of screws when weighing up against concrete. Hmmm.

You could try repeating to yourself "I'm famous in Fulham, I'm famous in Fulham".

I'm a complete layman, but if you are putting screws mid joist, presumably you dont even need noggins? As each span would only be (joist length/number of screws per joist).

I'm coming around to this view, but whichever way it goes I think there will be enough notice to react to it. I did enjoy the month I spent in the borders this year and will be spending more time in Scotland in '22 to better get to know the place.

You and me both, to me it was to help prevent twisting mid span.

And his imminent purchase of a GS1250 or a Vincent Black Shadow. No messing about with a learner bike for our village idiot.

Why not try New Zealand, very similar but a lot further away. I feel sorry for the current residents but it's a big place by population.
So typical that you feel you are just living in this society without contributing to it's problems but really you think like a rat.

Sorry, I misread your comment. I thought you were saying for TW's cardboard tubes you'd need to dig 30 holes.
This is what I think of as ground screws

Well, I think it's clear that you're definitely taking this very well, Airhead.
I patched my flat roof the other day with a tin of something from Screwfix. Rained today, no drips through into unusably cold downstairs loo. Very pleased.
Can I make move onto fixing my gable end myself now? I think that's how skill progression is supposed to work, right?
