The inner and outer stayed on the bike while I serviced the hub. Can't imagine it got damaged. Keep meaning to replace it, but shifting is still working well enough so never got around to it. Will give it a good going-over tonight and see if I can spot anything wrong.

Just had a fettle. I hadn't put the axle tugs back on and the axle had been slipping forward slightly. I think that was it.
Snugged it all back up and put the tugs on and it's now shifting fine and making no nasty noises. In fact, the hub feels a bit better than before - which is the point of servicing I suppose.
But....
I over-enthusiastically tightened the axle nut and stripped it. I need this bike tomorrow so I'm going to ride it gently with one nut tight and the chain tugs on.
Will I die?
I presume the axle itself is much harder than the nut, so there'll be no damage there? Threads look fine. I've ordered a pair of new nuts from SJS.

I have those nuts in my shed .. you know the ones I am trying to find for the front nexus dynamo

Want to drop one off to me tonight, so I don’t die? I can also give you your saddle bag back!

What guide (if any) did you use to strip the hub? I should really probably do a service on the Nexus on my bakfiets, but it just seems to rumble on. I did have to replace the shifter cable after three years or so - I could feel it starting to go in the shifter, and when I took it out it was frayed about half way through.

Some fella has put a video on YouTube for the Alfine but essentially you just keep taking parts off until you can slide out the internals. Then give it an oil dunk and rebuild. There’s an intimidating amount of parts in the hub but they actually stay in one lump.

I ordered a pair of Shimano nuts from SJS but they haven’t arrived yet and where pricey at a tenner for two. Amey ordered the same ones recently and I tried one of his - it didn’t fit...
So while I waited for them I ordered a pack of ten stainless nuts from a motorbike store on Amazon in the size listed in the Alfine device doc: 3/8 26TPI. Ten cost me £4 delivered.
I cleaned up the axle and they went on really nicely. Some thread was still exposed so I whacked a second on - more to protect the threads than anything else.

I just got mugged for this bike, so if anyone spots it please let me know. Also on the lookout for a similar frame/bike to build a replacement.

No hubs gear this time? (TBF the yellow one isn’t exactly a looker).

No hub gear, no tubeless and no dynamo yet either. Lots to do before this one lives up to the old one.
You did says you haven’t changed the cable.
Check the housing perhaps? It might be frayed at each end on top of checking the indexing.
