  • Reader’s necks.

I took the finish off this 2001 MIA tele gradually over years with fine grit sanding/wire wool. Think I may have treated it with danish oil or lemon oil at some point but it’s pretty much bare in the busy sections now. Showing the transition to the original finish on the headstock. It was pretty thin. Love the way it feels now.

  • Evil sticker!! 😉

  • I know! Fuckers. I leave it in there to remind me of the day I bought it tho. I still have the receipt.

  • I'm sure we talked about the last chance bullshit they pulled when they were going bust. They sold stuff on consignment and never paid the seller. This happened to a guy I knew through TDPRI. He lived here for a while and put his stuff on consignment with Andy's when he left. They flogged it and never paid up. It took threats of turning up mob-handed for them to finally find the cash.

I almost felt sorry for them as it was obvious they were going bust, but around the same time I took an old Big Muff in to be repaired and when I came back to collect it it was for sale in the window.

    They weren't even embarrassed. Fuckers.

  • Anyone know If there is a Squire Jazzmaster model that's a cut above the rest, but not Fender prices? Just for twiddling on rather than performing.

  • My Stratishcaster neck has just a thin coat of Danish oil rubbed in with wire wool. Feels lovely!
(Note to self: hoover that rug)

  • The J Mascis Squire JM is usually touted as very good for it's price

  • Excuse the mess, I’m in mid-sort-out

What's the Fender? Looks like one of those offset teles.

  • I’ve a couple of friends who have them, very happy with them.

Couple of things to watch - if it’s a standard Jazzmaster you’re after, this ain’t it. The pickups are actually P90 coils under JM covers, and the bridge is a Tune-o-matic style.

  • I bought a Classic Vibe Squier JM a little while back, pickups aren't great and it needs a setup but it's great value for the money... Mine's about to morph into a baritone...

  • It's an MIJ Korina Offset Tele. Korina body, korina neck (chunky U-shape), 10" radius RW board, P90s. Weighs a ton, feels great. Needs a few setup tweaks still.

  • As has been said, the J Mascis signature is the standout because it has an unusually good neck. They are discontinued now though and I don't know what the prices are like. In the last few years of production they changed the fingerboard from rosewood to Indian laurel (in line with all Squiers).

  • Cool, thanks all.

With the discounts on Fender ones, almost seems worth getting one of them. Noticeably better? Not experienced with electric really despite a few previous dabbles.

  • Depends which model you're talking about. The Mexican-made Player is also not reeeeeally a Jazzmaster, it has humbuckers and simplified switching. The Vintera ones (also Mexican-made) are more vintage-correct but also more expensive.

There are a couple of limited run ones at the moment that look nice e.g. - https://www.andertons.co.uk/fender-limited-edition-player-jazzmaster-black-matching-headstock-0147902506 - with painted headstocks and American-made pickups. They have pau ferro fretboards like all Mexican-made Fenders, which tends to have quite an orange colour compared to the traditional rosewood.

American Performer is a bit like the Player models, they're "modernised" somewhat (Strat bridge/trem, the horror), and above that you're into the American Pro or American Original which are lovely but 1500+. Occasionally you get an import run of Japanese models costing around a grand.

Basically this is why I don't own a Jazzmaster… I always end up looking at the most expensive ones and convincing myself that that's the only thing that would scratch the itch.

  • It’s here!

  • 5w Marshall origin is veryfuckingloud

  • Have you got the original shipped fender strings on still? They're not particularly bright in my experience. Or maybe you're thinking of a more active / musicman stingray sound? In which case an external preamp like a sansamp bass driver might help that (yeah, throw more money at it lol)

  • Yes, I haven't changed the strings yet. The (lack of) brightness isn't a bad thing at all, from demos I was expecting a lot more zingy treble and was expecting to need to tone it down a bit for what I wanted. Probably just to do with the setup I quickly tested it on - straight into the hi-Z input of my audio interface with a preamp plugin, compressor plugin and Ampeg SVT-VR emulation. Haven't spent much time tweaking any settings.

  • Looks good man. They usually ship with 9s on to make them feel slinky. I'd leave them unless you have a burning desire to beef up.

  • The vintage modified squires are very good. Despite the name they are very close to originals. I bought as many as I could when they were cheap

  • That's super nice, congrats! Get a Gotoh, 3 sadddle brass bridge on there, stat.

  • Anyone on here got a recommendation for buying a blank pedal enclosure? I want to rehouse the guts of my Double Muff, that thing is put together like a christmas tree ornament but it sounds good

  • That's a great looking guitar!

I like those bridges - my Dad's got a 1970-something Telecaster (in the same colour as yours - it looks identical) with that style on it -it's my favourite guitar we've got between us :)

  • I just ordered a pedal from Jedspeds - I've not received it yet so can't really properly recommend , but they've got a bunch of different sized enclosures and knobs - and Jed replies to emails almost straight away.
