  • Not going to happen while I live in a flat though

Yeah, it's not a pleasant smell, kitchen definitely smells quite smokey after roasting (even lighter roasts), can't see that going down too well!

  • Are there any recommended coffee machines on sale at the moment?

I use an aeropress at work and I've heard ground to cup is cheaper than bean to cup, plus I use a cafetiere sometimes so I'm thinking
    -nice grinder
-nice ground coffee to cup machine for espresso/long blacks

Not particularly bothered about a steam function

    Cheers

  • Any idea of budget?

  • 400 ISH maybe all in (ideally less but don't wanna buy anything again in a few years)

  • This is a helpful video on budget espresso. The Gaggia Classic/Iberital MC2 combo is a popular one for those on a budget. The main limitation is that the MC2 isn't really adjustable between grinding for filter and grinding for espresso (you can adjust between the two, it just takes a VERY long time).
Others will likely remember better than my tired mind the best options for a £200 grinder.

  • hmu if anyone fancies a free 500g bag of Throat Punch Ethiopian Djimmah Arabica beans.

i cocked up the order and its continued presence in my cupboard is a constant reminder of my own incompetence.

    pick up in SE27.

  • Did you add one to many to your order of beard oil?

  • Just get a little hario pouring jug and a kalita wave and we can have fully matching coffee set ups

  • Yes! Hario air kettle is one of the best £10 I ever spent. Probably only second to the plastic v60 itself.

  • Hmmm.... I did get an Amazon voucher.

I'm almost always making coffee for 2, hence sticking to the the FP for so long, and other than the little crust break and a couple of scoops, it's pretty hands off.

  • Question for the nerds:

Does water retention increase as you grind finer? One thing I noticed since I started using the Wilfa is that I'm getting less volume out than I was before.

  • Yeah I feel like it must do. Sand vs gravel

  • Very extra paid search practices in the third wave coffee scene

  • Sloppy query matching rather than anything particularly aggressive, I'd have thought.

  • I am avoiding Pact and Coffee Direct as they both appear as sponsored links when you search for Expresso Beans*.
(*it is an alternate movie poster site, with a really shit name)

  • Free to a good home, we don't have a machine anymore so don't use these. Collection from SE15.

  • My sister in law got me the Dark Arts Buffy the Vampire Slayer themed coffee for my birthday. Same beans, processed 3 different ways (natural, honey, washed).

As someone who's never done coffee tasting or cupping, it's a fun way of tasting how different processes affect the beans.

  • Definitely recommend keeping an eye out for the Square Mile online live cupping things. Absolutely great fun.

On a tangential note, I found this video pretty hilarious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2cIOOG4ImE

  • In our new place Emma is going to be commuting from south-coast to London a few days a week and I'll be wfh/playing housemaid so we're going to be on different schedules and don't fancy getting up at the crack of dawn to make her a coffee but there's also fuck all decent coffee in littlehampton so she requires caffeination for her 2h commute.

as much as I love my vario it has it's little idiosyncrasies and when I've tried to teach emma to make coffee in the past it's required the lions share of the tutorial to impart it's secrets. whereas the gaggia is pretty much plug and play.

so I'm wondering if there's any new grinders worth looking at in the £250-350 range (including funds from sale of vario in that) for a workhorse grinder I can dial in when i'm using it then we just fill the hopper and get a consistent dose every time so she can push a button to dispense, use the ocd to flatten the grounds. tamp and is good to go. without risk of her knocking the sliders and changing the grind settings completely.

I'm not bothered about filter grind so just needs to do fantastic espresso grind.

  • Eureka Mignon Specialita is right at the top of your price range but maybe worth a look? Grind adjuster is out of the way and time-controlled dosing.

  • I’d agree, I’m very happy with my Silenzio which is a little less (and simpler) than the Specialita.

  • Sage Smart Grinder Pro at the lower end of that budget, but it does exactly what you want and good espresso.

  • Eureka mignon was my first thought. Although not very familiar with which exact model!

  • Been asked by multiple people what I may want for christmas. I'm using the stock basket on my Gaggia Classic but heard people argue going IMS competizione or VST makes a whole lot of different, or using distribution tools, upgraded shower screen etc

Basically, any gadget worth asking Santa for or should not believe the hype? 🤔

  • Basket & shower screen upgrades are always handy IMO. A bottomless portafilter would be high on my list too.
