Well it’s a good job that the West decided to prioritise the profits of pharmaceutical companies over getting the whole world vaccinated

I read this morning that the Netherlands met every plane landing from SA and tested them on the spot. 1 in 6 people were Covid positive and made to quarantine.

The Guardian is reporting 1 in 10 based on yesterday's figures.

Christina Pagel is reporting 1 in 6, based on what a Dutch colleague told her this morning.

1 in 6 or 1 in 10, its pretty bleak.

The source of the confusion is from a Dutch Health Ministry announcement that preliminary results indicated that they expect 85 people to be +ve but once the testing was done, it was only 61.

Up to 85 passengers on just two flights from South Africa could test positive for COVID-19 after arriving in the Netherlands on Friday morning, the Dutch health ministry announced after preliminary test results came back.

So far, tests for 110 of around 600 passengers have been processed with 15 coming back as positive. With a positivity rate of nearly 15 per cent, the Dutch health ministry believes it will find around 85 positive cases despite mandatory pre-departure testing.

Its worth pointing out that on paper, all 600 of those passengers should have had a test before leaving SA according the curret Dutch travel rules.

Reading the news and someone planning to fly here from South Africa via Zanzibar to avoid paying for hotel quarantine.

If this is true, then surely it’s already here. It must have been circulating in SA for weeks.

One of the positive Omicron cases in Israel had been in Israel for 11 days (from SA) before getting symptoms and being tested.

Andrew Lilico has been v.quiet about covid today.

Spoke too soon. He has just started spouting anger about face masks.

So, what has been announced just now (masks in shops and on public transport, PCR test for travellers) is less than what they have had in Germany for months. There you also have to show your vaccination certificate for travelling and if you want to go to a restaurant, as well as a couple of other things. It hasn't been effective (huge number of cases, incidence higher than ever), so doing less is going to be less effective.

The idea that the UK is in a better position than other countries is also nonsense. It doesn't have a significant vaccination advantage any more, and probably even a larger infection base from which transmission and acute cases will follow than other countries, although it'll be similar in all those countries that 'opened up' in the summer. It's certainly very bad in Germany right now, with some intensive care patients airlifted to other areas where there are still beds for them.

Add the new variant to the mix and it's a great recipe for the winter.
