  • Sorry, only now I've seen this. I kept the windows open and a through draft, but I didn't really notice it. It doesn't linger at all either.

I've got a two year old and a six year old - they were fine. Said it smelled a bit, but like I said, it doesn't hang around for long.

  • Tiling: Invest in a £40 diamond tile table saw and a heavy duty tile cutter if you are doing a big job

  • Yes, a decent diamond cutter for the angle grinder can do it all at a push. I have a tiny Rubi cutter that can do mitres. It's been through a few heavy days.

If you're using a diamond wheel on the angle grinder try and get a wet rated one and use a sponge next to the cut to keep the dust down.

  • Bosch mitre saw

I'm going back and forth on it. Not sure if I've got the space. I've been looking for storage ideas. But I think the main thing is it's going to be an outdoor only tool.

This is a really useful video

  • Compound Mitre saws are the worst things to store.

  • As much as I'm struggling not to buy the Bosch one, I think a more compact evolution one is probably the right call for me.

Just hard not to get gassed by a deal on a nice tool.

  • That urge passed after many years. Just be careful that the evolution will actually cut a straight line. Some of the cheaper ones don't.

  • I have an evolution one. It's ok, but certainly not cabinet accurate. And the "stops" in the angle guide are about +/-5 degrees so needs to be set up with some other sort of angle finding tool every time.

@hugo7 if you can, find one where the saw slides on static rails rather than the rails sliding through guides on the base, if that makes sense. It will mean you can store it with the base right back up against the wall. Bosch do one with some weird concertina type arrangement that looks pretty nifty

  • New toy day.

  • I have an Evolution. I’d offer it to you for cheap but it’s not the small one. It’s a bit of a beast. If you do get one, check for square.

  • Yeah that's going to have to wait an awfully long time. Until I'm in double garage territory probably.

Good point about the rails tho.

TBH I'd pretty much settled on either the Black Friday Bosch, or this Evolution r185sms https://www.screwfix.com/p/evolution-r185sms-185mm-electric-single-bevel-sliding-multi-material-sliding-mitre-saw-220-240v/383gf
But leaning to the Bosch, because fuck it, why not?

Then I worked out the size of it, which means I need to budget for a stand... plus store the stand as well.

So now I'm back to weighing up the budget 185sms vs the r255smd with more powerful version with soft start. https://www.screwfix.com/p/evolution-r255sms-255mm-electric-single-bevel-sliding-multi-material-sliding-mitre-saw-220-240v/1062x

Gut says get the cheaper one and if I feel like I'm really limited, I can always sell and upgrade.

  • I finally stuck down the tile border around hearth and had the angle grinder out to trim the brass angle frame.. grout tile joints is the final task, but the weather demands I fire up this baby using oak parquet off cuts when Mrs M returns for another evening in.

  • It's also fucking heavy and awkward to move about...... More of a workshop toool.

Otherwise a very, very good saw.

  • Best (easiest) solution to this shit on a ceiling?

  • Probably guano would be the closest colour match.

  • I'd say kill it with fire but there is a possibility it contains asbestos so may not work.

Getting a decent plasterer to skim it is the easiest but not necessarily cheapest way to sort it.

  • We also suffer from this! Isn’t it wonderful!

  • So... Electric sander, very good mask, and Hoover?

But seriously, I thought the asbestos stuff was popcorn style. This is much more "decorative" (is even on the inside of the window sill) and is only in one room.

  • My understanding is the asbestos was a binding agent to hold texture so it could be any style.

  • Not that I'll risk it. Anyone have recommendations on someone to call and sort it?

  • I think I'm going to sell my Tado TRVs so PM me if you're interested and I'll try and work out what they're worth.

  • I've got a few nice lamps that use 12V G4 20W halogen bulbs. They came with a transformer built into the plug. Unfortunately the transformers have all now failed. I previously revived a couple of them by driving them with a standard downlight transformer that I put in an earthed enclosure. I'd like to revive the others, but would prefer not to have a separate enclosure. Is there a suitable wall-wart style 12V transformer that I could wire the lamp flex directly into or join to it with a torpedo connector. I'd think almost anything would work except that my understanding is that lighting adaptors are specifically rated down to 0W just in case the bulb fails.

  • Amazon test kit. I think general advice is board over it.
