  • Absolutely love it. Is there a chance that it could be interpreted as a "defender ring" though? I mean, its not likely it'd be noticed but I think rings with sharp points or blades are considered illegal in the UK. Maybe because the point isn't pointing outwards its fine...

  • I didnt know that was a thing.

I think the skull protrudes upwards too much, so will make a 2nd version (3d printing is great for this kind of iteration) which sits lower, but I can also round off the beak a bit more too.

  • I really don't think it's anything to worry about. More a question of curiosity for me. I've never heard of anybody getting in trouble for that sort of thing unless they've smashed it into somebody's face first.

Great design though. Really like it.

  • The cost for the part to fix my SuperSix Evo* (or rather, stop it getting damaged by a crap design) is coming in at 40 euros delivered in stainless steel at Shapeways, or £90 delivered in Ti from materialise.com (oof).

Materialise would actually charge the same for the print in SS, so it seems that they're just expensive rather than it being about the cost of the materials.

Anyone got any suggestions for someone else to try pls?

Edit: I've just submitted quotes to 3D Alchemy and Protolabs for Ti so I'll see what they say...

  • I've joined the club after successfully building a Prusa MK3S+ kit that I got for my birthday. Was somewhat more of an epic build task than I initially expected, and had a couple of hairy moments with nuts getting stuck when using a screw to pull them into position, but it passed the self-test first time and has been printing really nicely.
Wondering if there are any recommendations for useful patterns? I've grabbed some great bits off thingiverse and prusa collections, and started fiddling with OpenSCAD & sketchup to make some custom bits, but I'm sure there must be some "everyone should print this" suggestions out there too :)

  • Made a thing.

    A soap dish.

Plan is to make a mold and cast some in concrete.

  • And another.

Hoping for bright things in the lucrative soap dish market in 2022

  • I love the idea and the look of it but scraping soap scum out of that design? No thanks!

  • I'm pretty inspired by this though...have been toying with the idea of printing some molds/forms for a while.

  • That's the beauty of it. Just print another one.

  • Originally I wanted the hexagons to have angled top faces, but doing that in Fusion360 was too hard.

  • The people who buy my designs won't be the kind of people who clean their own soapdishes :)

  • Concrete?
I hate to be 'that guy', but unless you have a vacuum pump to completely degas your (hand mixed?) concrete it will be riddled with tiny air pores. These will be the perfect breeding ground for extremophile moulds and algae that can cope with the alkaline environment and 'eat' the soap residues.
A simple quick curing, (2 hours), 2-part polyurethane resin might be a better suggestion.

  • The cost is for machine time really. The materials cost between SS and Ti will be much smaller.
Try Laser Prototypes Europe, they're my go to place for professional work.

For small parts in nylon go to 3DprintUK, https://www.3dprint-uk.co.uk/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAnuGNBhCPARIsACbnLzo-4X6gclrtsW0gQOAv72V77Y-6FF6fD0kcBJi64DYtT_ZEhLXCwbMaAtiREALw_wcB

Their polished black nylon parts are excellent quality.

Economy runs are 50% cheaper, but depending on demand, you might end up waiting a couple of weeks for parts, or it might come in 3 days!

  • On the rare occasion I make something useful, I upload the design to Thingiverse. It can be quite rewarding to see people making your stuff and leaving comments or likes. Today took things to the next level...somebody sent me a tip in Paypal for an accessible phone case design I uploaded a few years ago!

In other news, I've got the most frustrating print problem ever. My printer has basically been working perfectly for over a year but suddenly started underextruding quite badly when I put a new spool of filament on it.

Cue five hours of checking e-steps, feed path, cleaning and reassembling hot end, cleaning and reassembling extruder drive gear, replacing bowden tube etc etc with zero luck. I checked its not the new filament but switching back to something that was working last week.

Decided enough was enough and just bought upgraded hotend and extruder to fit. If that doesn't solve the problem, I'm hoying this fucking thing out of the window.

  • Another print done. 30% infill so should be nice and strong.

  • Infill percentage by itself doesn't do that much for part strength. Helps to add an extra layer or two to the shells and increase infill overlap percentage to 50%+ to make sure infill is strongly fixed to the outer layers. Nice solid looking parts though.

  • I cant remember the other settings I used, but they feel like they will do the job.

  • They’re plenty solid. Will get some pics tomorrow when they’re on the wall…

  • Nice design, I'd maybe slightly round off the corners to avoid digging into the soap.
I was just thinking of 3D printing a soap rack to replace a couple of cheap chromed ones I have that are perfect apart from annoyingly going rusty. Would be good CAD practice for me. It's either that or go the other way and attempt to steam-bend some split bamboo.
