Couple of weird holes in a new carbon fork.

Posted on
  • Hiya,

My girlfriend's picked up a Cube Axial WLS Disc in the sales and just put it together for her.

It has a carbon fork - and on the inside of each blade there's a little hole thats not uniform in any way apart from its identical position on each side.

Cavity is actually the right word - it's too deep to be a dent/mark/hole.

Attached two photos, and one with flash so you can see inside.

There's a couple of other mentions of this online, but no real definitive answer. What do you reckon? Poor manufacturing, breather holes or a fatal flaw?

  • Looks a bit rough: if they are intentional I wouldn't be impressed.

What do Cube have to say? Did you buy it new?

  • They vent holes for excess gases produced during welding... oh...

  • It's a new bike! Emailed cube, waiting for a reply.

It's not just this bike by the looks of it:

  • Would these holes allow dynamo cables through?

  • Reply from Cube as follows (complete with images). I guess the neon/blue paint makes it super pronounced. Still odd, and not exactly refined, but hey.

    Hello blambert,
    thank you for your message.
All our carbon Models have produced-related seatsays or forks a small opening on. This serves, after the manufacuturing process, the redidues to suck off the frame.
The openings have not effect on the durability or the stability of the frame of fork.

  • Yeh< I had them on some Planet X forks; were fine.

  • Have the same on my Forme Longcliffe carbon forks. Have emailed Forme about them but never got a response.

You'd think they'd fill them in with some resin or something before painting.

Just glad I found this page as was unsure if they were safe to ride.

  • hi new here, i was wondering if you guys covered this with some epoxy or is it safe like that. i had a similar hole, also not a well round hole.

  • Hi, I left mine alone as didn't want to make them look any worse or do any damage. I just road the bike, it's been fine. I still have it. You quickly forget about them tbh.
