Otto, like many whippets, has the bad habit of sprinting up to approaching dogs in the hope that they will chase him. This is overly boisterous behaviour but entirely friendly and if the other dog is well socialised then its a non event. We know this behaviour is not desirable though so we manage it as best we can, being careful to have him on the lead if we are near dogs he doesn't know etc.
Today, Otto surprised me by sprinting towards and doing a near pass of a young spaniel who he wanted to chase him. This caught me totally off guard, but not as off guard as the young spaniel who screamed and then bolted. Otto just stood there looking confused as this young dog just pegged it across a road and out of sight.
Owner started yelling at me for my dog attacking his. Thankfully managed to find the terrified dog not far away and get her back to her owner who was very grateful. I know I could have done more to avoid that situation happening but imagine having a dog that is so scared of other dogs trying to play with it...it must be draining.
Dogs charging aren’t entirely friendly. It’s quite a dominant thing that is often interpreted as a threat by other dogs. Watch out for it around protective breeds.
We just had a shit morning walk experience.
