  • That’s an unfortunate effect of the manufacturing process. Does it really trap that much?

I’d probably grind a fair bit coarser than V60 to take into account the larger holes in the mesh, then try to pour slower than you would with a V60 to manually slow the flow and make sure what you pour hits the bed of coffee and doesn’t just run out the sides. You probably get quite an honest tasting brew with that thing.

  • Yeah its shit, traps loads of water and slows the brew time down significantly while the metal mesh let's through a lot of fines. Much better with holes drilled through and a paper filter

  • I think this is one of the decafs that Tom Scott liked in his tasting video, gonna try it anyway - https://ravecoffee.co.uk/products/colombia-villamaria-sugarcane-decaf?variant=31667506118793

  • What do people use for water filtering at home these days? Brita?

  • Sometimes, perhaps once a week when the stars align and I have good beans, I can make a good cup of coffee. This @Mont58Coffee Nicaraguan is smashing it this morning.

  • Anyone else here own a Rocket Appartamento? I’ve had nothing but trouble with mine since 2017.

It inconsistently overfills the boiler to overpressure - spouting water into the tray then all over the place. I replaced the controller unit (under warranty, part was £100!) and it was okay for a month, then carried on.

Now, only four years into its life, the vibe pump needs replacing. I cleaned and back flushed the machine last week and after flushing some water through pulled a shot only for it to take 30s to push through the puck (grind, dose and tamp were dialed pre clean). Vibe pump has a different note to it too.

So it’s going back to Bella Barista for it’s second service and more replacement parts.

I don’t know whether it’s just that the Apartamento is Rocket’s budget machine but, at £1200-1300 I expected it to out last my ten years with a Gaggia baby class. I’m not sure I should have such high expectations…

… when this dies I’ll be getting a proper machine. Like the LM Linea or Decent.

  • Before I move I'll have to pop up and you can get another set of eyes on your pulling technique. then we can go drink beer and you can show me your pulling technique.

  • Anyone on here want to buy this wilfa svart? It's a few years old but hasn't been used in 2yrs as it was in my office pre-covid - and a move in work patterns means I don't need it anymore.

Collection in SE23 and it has a European plug - think I’ve seen these go for £60 recently, which seems fair? But shout if I am off.

  • Man I remember when you got that and thinking it looked like a great machine and how happy you were to be upgrading. Sounds like a total bummer and 2/3 x the price of a classic/Silvia and little to show for it. Could you just stick it on eBay after the service and cut your losses?

The Florentine special edition Linea mini looks nice 😉

  • My silvia is extracting slowly. Nothing has changed from before. Its like it's under pressured suddenly. I tried a Google but just got lots of shit. Any ideas?

Edit. I googled low pressure and found something useful. Ignore me.

  • The decaf I linked from Rave above is quite good! Natural processed with sugarcane/ethyl alcohol decaffeination from Colombia. The packaging and generally exuberant branding are annoying but the coffee itself is much more interesting than your typical decaf, for me.

  • I have to have a meeting on Monday in the Holborn area.

Where is good to meet that also serves good coffee around that hood?

  • Is Leather Lane too far away? Dept. of Coffee & Social Affairs and Prufrock are both excellent. On the other side there's a Monmouth in Covent Garden that's pretty decent (but quite small inside IIRC)

  • Not too far for me, but maybe for the people I'm meeting.

  • If you are near Tottenham court road, Penny Drop, W1T 2AH is really good. There filters are always very good.

  • Absolutely loving the Yellow Bourbon coffees at the moment. Is that you @Nah?

  • Would anyone be interested in buying my Baratza Sette 270? It’s a year a a bit old and is in great condition. It has the original espresso burr and the coarse grind burr upgrade. I’m thinking £250-275 ideally. I’m happy to post it within the UK and I think I have the original box somewhere.

  • Would anyone like this, I think knock off, ceramic Origami dripper? Bought it on an whim but am happy with V60’s and trying to declutter so it’s not going to get any use here.

No base so you’d have to buy (or make) that yourself.

  • Got another order from Ancoats coffee, a Ugandan one, I don't think I've ever had coffee from Uganda before but this is really nice

  • I've been enjoying that lately too.

  • What's the recommendation for a grinder, probably 100-150 quid. Want to grind for everything from filter to espresso

  • Hand grinder. 1ZPresso JX-Pro. I promise you, there is nothing motorised below 150 that will grind everything. Unless you get a decent deal on a used Sette 270/other entry level espresso grinder.

  • Running low on espresso beans and was worried order wouldn’t arrive in time, so asked my wife to pick some up from coffee shop. 200g of Assembly house espresso blend for £12! Wtf

  • You might get a secondhand Sage Smart Grinder Pro for that money. That will happily do both but I wouldn’t be tempted to buy any powered grinder with a RRP £100-£150 new. The Sage is really the one that will do what you’re asking. You’ll get an Iberital MC2 for that budget too, but a lot of people have commented that it’s difficult to adjust it from filter to espresso and vice versa. It’s more of a grinder to set up for good espresso (probably slightly better espresso than the Sage) and tweak.
