Loose bottle cages bosses aluminum frame

Posted on
  • Hey All,

Just noticed that the reason for my wobbly bottle cages is that the bosses have come loose in the frame.

Don't really have cash to have them welded back in (if that's what you'd do with them?)

Would gluing them in place be a bad idea?

If I don't get it fixed is it likely anything catastrophic will happen to the frame?

Any advice would be much appreciated,

  • If it’s a metal frame, perhaps a drop of super glue or mild hot glue will help?

  • You can try the bolt-tightening method as seen on youtube. It works on alloy frames and cannot really damage it further.
It will press the collar of the rivnut against the tube, also re-deforming the rivnut inside. So it can basically make it good to go for a long time again.
One thing to keep in mind is that too tight bottle cages are often at fault.

  • Had mine fixed at a local bike shop, don't remember it being much £ or hard for them to do.

  • Go to your LBS and ask for a quote. They need to drill them out and put new rivets.

  • Thanks all, probably should have used YouTube as my first port of call. Used this method in the end and didn't take long to sort.

  • That's just worked a treat on mine too - thanks for posting the vid!
