  • Not true - he picked that up from a friend after he'd got there, I think the day/evening before - not sure if that friend will be charged with anything RE: supplying a kid with a rifle, can only hope so.

The friend bought it for him under the agreement he would buy it once he turned 18

  • The poppy is like a MAGA hat isn't it? When will someone fight back?

@amey want to launch a campaign?

  • Can't believe we have Rittenhouse stans on here tbh

  • Millions of people wear a Poppy each November. some of them undoubtedly belong to the far-right, most of them, I would hope, do not.

Similarly, there will be people in Sweden who both eat Herring and belong to the far-right, but it would be ridiculous to condemn every Swedish Herring eater because of that.

  • But yeah I think he's going to be aquitted too, just by the behaviour of the judge let alone how the US seems to treat gun crime as just another thing.

I can see some people buying the self defence argument, he's got a guy charging at him with a skateboard or whatever. But the response to that isn't to kill, it's not an appropraite level of force. That and the he put himself right there in the situation, he went out of his way that evening to stand with a gun outside some business he has no connection with and claim to be protecting it while also claiming to be providing medical support despite being untrained.

  • I do share this sentiment. I think the poppy culture needs to be taken back from the right wing. It doesent belong there. Its sad that its ended up there too.

  • I'll donate to the RBL, I won't wear a poppy though - it's become synonymous with the England flag.

Of all the thousands of stories I've read in newspapers over the years, this is still one of those that continues to affect me the most. Relevant to the present conversation, when it comes to symbolic action like Remembrance Day, you obviously have people who exploit it for their non-commendable ends, but you also have people like Olive Cooke.

  • Yep, clearly went out again with a bag of weapons after getting home safely but still acted in self defence (in the moment, I guess) in the eyes of the jury.

  • some of them undoubtedly belong to the far-right, most of them, I would hope, do not

    About 52% I reckon.

  • Thinking of @hillbilly and @mrs_socks. Hope it's not affecting you too badly? It sounds like an Ahr Valley type of event, only in a wider valley. Massive infrastructure damage and road access to Vancouver cut off.

  • You know it is possible have a balanced view, where you find Rittenhouse morally repugnant, but also are able to understand an argument of self defense?
Rittenhouse has a verbal confrontation with Rosenbaum and Ziminski, who is armed.
Rittenhouse runs away, Ziminski fires his weapon, Rosenbaum chases Rittenhouse into another carpark. Rittenhouse fires his weapon.

Huber is the third person to attack Rittenhouse after Rosenbaum has been killed, the first to do so with a weapon and the first to do so when he is on the floor.

Again, being able to understand the basis of his self defense claim is not the same as agreeing with his stances on anything else .

  • Jesus. Rain is pretty bloody scarey.

  • Got a source for those sequence of events?

  • Watch the video

  • Yes. Although I'm not sure it documents the verbal confrontation at the start. The bit I found confusing in the video is why Rittenhouse starts running before he is chased by Rosenbaum. Does anyone have an answer to that?

  • . If you don't want to watch someone being shot, but there are video timelines around

  • If he haven’t had access to firearm; would he still seek conflict?

  • This article (posted earlier) does a better job at telling a more balanced story than the video on background.

  • I wish Remembrance day and poppies were explicitly about remembering all war dead and injured, not focusing on armed forces, it would be more useful then as a reminder of the horrors of war.

  • Why do you hate Britten?

Wouldn't it be nice if the cenotaph events included representation from Germany, Japan etc too? Its not even 10o years yet I suppose but I'd hope that at some point in the future the remembrance activities became less nationalistic.

  • I haven't read the whole article, but the paragraph on the sequence of the shooting doesn't seem to be an objective account or entirely consistent with the video.

Given the reputation for editorial thoroughness at the New York, the mixed-use of protester, demonstrator, and rioter doesn't seem to have been particularly thought through.
