When is Internet going to be considered a service like water, electricity or gas. So that you can move into a property and it still have Internet.
Seems mad we are not at that place already.
-
• #110804
Probably never, because you can now have pretty good internet quite cheap over mobile while you're waiting for your fixed line hook up. There's no obvious market incentive for ISPs to get involved in contract hand-overs the way other utilities do. The other utilities are burdened with government regulations which are a hangover from the days of nationalisation, but internet was never nationalised.

I can see that, however phone signal in the UK is still a joke. I remeber the flat I had in Beckenham, couldn't get 4G!
With the new world order and work from home, it would make sense to treat it like the others, and that I was available. Especially as it can take weeks to get internet fixed in the UK. When I came to Spain, I ordered movistat fibre online at 4am by 9am someone had been over and plugged the box in, and it was a Sunday. If it were like that then no issue. -

The danger of nationalisation, or its surrogate of imposing a duty on providers to do some supposed "essential public utility" work, is that we end up with the GPO, which took 6 months and a £118 hook up fee (about £400* in today's money) to install copper wire to your house.
*This might not seem too bad, but bear in mind that it was set artificially low to satisfy political demands that upfront cost should be affordable, and heavily cross-subsidised by very high monopoly rental and usage fees.

All providers* are a thin veneer over Openreach, which is the GPO with a new hat and lots of the same public service obligations, because fixed telecommunication networks are a natural monopoly and no amount of Thatcherite bollocks can change that.
(* modulo the minority of the country wired for Virgin Media, and the even tinier proportion with access to other networks)

Which is why it takes so long to get anything done 🙂
fixed telecommunication networks are a natural monopoly
Most so-called natural monopolies have been assembled from diversely held private assets stolen from their rightful owners by communist governments, sometimes given a veneer of legitimacy by the payment of token compensation.

But, and this is the important bit, the universal service obligation means that for your £118 or whatever it is they'll spend £180,000 running a cable out to you.

There’s a Class War thread for that 😬👍

The "they" in that sentence is all the other subscribers, and in the case of loss making nationalised enterprises, tax payers.

Multi-colour I'm afraid, but I really appreciate the offer! Apparently the design (with neon fades) is too complex for the screen printers I've used before so recommendation seems to be digital printing, but with the caveat that the colours may not be as bright as screen printing... 🤷♂️
-
• #110813
Ooof, that sounds technical & expensive. It is possible to digital print neons, but the printer will need dedicated neon ink reservoirs. Another alternative might be to print the base design in one medium, then screenprint the neon fades over the top to get a really strong, bright colour. Good luck with your quest!

Anyone know if anyone who collects scrap metal from business premises in central london?
Been a bit difficult finding someone. -
• #110815
If it is sufficiently high value and you have a large enough quantity, I would've thought most metal re-cyclers would be interested. What have you got?
-
• #110816
Mostly cycling components, which aren’t regarded as anywhere near high value
-
• #110817
We had trouble getting rid of ours and there was loads. Found someone in the end who said they'd pay if there was enough, there wasn't enough get to paid but getting rid was payment enough.
-
• #110818
Indeed. I think you'll be struggling to find someone to collect those. I had a load of zirconium tubing which EMR in Wandsworth took off my hands. Kept the workshop in biscuits for a month or two.

• #110820
I’ll ask our metal man if he’s keen. Drop me a PM with a post code or closer location?

How many colours in your design?
-
• #110822
Is there a traveller's site nearby? They are usually happy to collect scrap. Check gumtree etc, sometimes someone on a local site will come and collect it (this is certainly true in Bristol).

Yes, that's the point of something like a universal service obligation - it socialises the costs for those members of society who would otherwise be excluded.
It's a benefit for said society.

I don't know, but quite a lot. The printer I am speaking to says their screen printing capacity has 7 and it wouldn't handle it...

I'll latch onto this if you don't mind?
3 turtleneck tops and 3 hoodies, need some sparkly vinyl though, doable?

One of these will keep you going for a little while.
