If he went in too hard to try and match Lewis's pace and the car oversteered even slightly, he'd have had to open the steering to counter it. He's having to make a tighter turn than Lewis and at a higher entry speed than he had been previously doing.
That doesn't absolve him of any wrong doing, because he would have known that making that move, there was potential for having to counter steer and cause a crash.
