  • As far is I'll get today, need to play the vacuum cleaner game with the fork and I can't be arsed.

    Jobs left

    -front derailleur
    -front brake
    -torque stem and seatpost
-trim and cap cables (no more death trap loops everywhere)
    -wrap bars (black this time)
    -install pedals

  • Trying to work out the saddle - bar drop there, as those bricks look larger than the Scoble standard

  • I’ll bring the calipers and see if I can find a UK standard 65mm brick.

  • Just need to tape the bars now, and fiddle with the front derailleur. I’ve resigned to sub optimal shifting with SRAM and non-matching rings but I’m hoping to get it back to passable. The tyres felt good on 500m of groad in the local park, big up Teravail.

@amey do I mount the bell before or after taping?

  • Cant help but think this will get in the way in the drops but let’s see.

  • Interesting position for the bell, it can stay for a while. Shifts like shit but it’s good to have it back. Think it’s a marked improvement over the raw frame.

  • Nicely done. are you gonna do a decal somewhere or leave it like it is? headtube logo/badge?

  • Not sure yet, I’ll be receiving 10 of these because I finally caved for the 10 stickers for €1 ads I kept getting bombed with. Could look good on the head tube but I probably won’t because it feels a bit strange to put my logo on something I didn’t make.

I think it’ll stay decal-less until @Jaap has decided on a brand name.

  • That's a big shoe rack!

  • Well we have a lot of shoes!

For the person googling aluminum brazing propane torch like I did a while ago: yes it sort of works but not really. Maybe if it's thin walled stuff, but brazing a 10x1mm tube to a a 10x2mm flat bar took some support from our creme brulee burner and even then I struggled.

I think there's a ghost busters joke in here somewhere:

  • Oh, it's not actually the beginnings of the ultimate porteur rack then :-(

  • Call it a precursor. I did enjoy the brazing even if I'm still a bit jittery from the stress of constant risk of severely maiming myself.

  • Bodged a pec deck-type saddlebag support. Voile straps just wrap around the seat rails for now, I could do with some space between bag and saddle but I'm not paying €80 for a Hobo Pieces Restuvus and want less visual bulk than a Bagman. Those little Velo Orange tabs look well sketchy but might do the trick?

  • Speedvagen put their logo on stems they colour match but didn’t make

  • Yeah and I suppose I did design the frame, we'll see.

  • The rack performed brilliantly, had some pretty rough bits of 'gravel' and it didn't budge. Initially I thought I'd modify this bag for its new use but I'll probably just replace it as I'd need to take it apart almost entirely which is a huge faff.

Front derailleur is still performing terribly which is frustrating as it was fine in the stand, I might have mounted it a bit too low, will investigate when I can be arsed again.

  • Shifting is mostly sorted now, brilliant bike and brilliant saddle bag if I do say so myself. Does invite to bring more crap than I need, but nothing better on a 30 mile loop than making coffee halfway through.

  • What do you when 90mm is a bit long but 80mm too short?

  • Try a 90mm -17°, raised up by 10mm spacer?

  • You guys are missing the obvious solution, get a fillet brazed 85mm stem.

  • Sure, there are framebuilders who could fabricate such a thing, but who on earth wants to deal with the likes of them

    ;-)

  • Stem inbound, thanks again @M_V ! Beyond excited, I will be trying my hand at chemical bluing and then add a clear lacquer for some added rust protection.

  • That's a really nice looking stem, really enjoy the bits @M_V is putting out!

Interested in seeing how the bluing goes. I caught a bit of an Old Shovel YouTube vid where he uses Super Blue Liquid Gun Blue on a frame with lacquer overtop and it looked great, particular with some stenciled decals. Looks like the stuff is available in the UK from eBay for ~£12 too.
