Do people even use carving knives anymore?
You could go nuts (nice but pricey)
https://www.boroughkitchen.com/products/laguiole-en-aubrac-carving-set-with-juniper-handle
I think if it has history then take the old knife to a maker and see if they can sharpen it a make it useful. Blenheim forge in SE London might be worth a call. Although a bit of googling might come up with something more local to you.

Blenheim forge is really local (and really cool), but in their old age my grandparents have become quite anxious about simple decisions. They’ve requested something new and I’ll probably just do as they’ve asked.
Thanks though, this has all been very useful. -

Woah haven’t seen you around here in a while Joe!
Swapped sweet pink fixies for bread knives?? 😂

Hey!
I’ve just been lurking, mainly in the DIY and ‘how do I extension’ threads. Although the pink Bridgestone still lives, I’m mainly out and about on a caad7 these days. -

I've lost my multi-tool.
What recommendations for a new one?
I want:
- knife
- screwdrivers (flat and philips) - multiple sizes is a nice to have
- pliers are a nice to have
I do want:
- scissors
I did have a Leatherman Free T4... I thought buying a luminous green colour would prevent my losing it, I was wrong. I liked it, but as a screwdriver it suffered from not being centred.
May buy another, but are there recommendations?
- knife

Since I bought it back in 2000, my Leatherman Wave (it has everything you list above, and more) has been the go-to tool that I pick up whenever I'm going out on site. (I should add that my job is the sort which doesn't ordinarily require me to take tools on site - I just enjoy being prepared for any eventuality).
-

Oh, I should make it clear... I'm not going for "more tools", just essential tools.
So many have metal files, scissors, all kinds of things. I would prefer few tools but the right ones.
Will go have a look at the Wave though :)

For the record, I also have one called a Skeletal CX or something. It doesn't get much use as it doesn't have all that many tools. Knife, pliers, slightly wanky screwdriver (two different sizes of Pozi), and that's about it.
Horses for courses, I guess.ETA - I've just noticed that there are also 2 x flat bit screwdrivers on there - it just lacks the scissors you were after. Maybe that's the one you should look at - it is also lighter than most other tools of that size.

Another vote for the wave.
…which seems to have been discontinued. The Wave+ has 10 or so more tools.

I can recommend the Leatherman Skeletool CX. It's a tidy little thing with everything you've listed. Ive got the one with a partial carbon body, it looks good but i doubt it makes much actual difference in function.
-
• #4262
That sounds like the CX I have - I think the carbon fibre bit is meant as a weight saver rather than anything else. BTW I managed to do this to mine, whilst attempting to cut through a Halfords £2.50 cable lock. Replaced immediately under warranty by Snow & Rock, from whom I'd bought it.

This one is close to being perfect https://www.leatherman.com/signal-439.html
But I'd get rid of the bit driver and just have a philips + flat head screwdriver.
Actually this is probably the one: https://www.leatherman.com/free-p2-832636.html
Pliers, screwdrivers, knife.
I'll ignore the fact that they have a metal file next to a magnet.

I like your definition of essential tools. 👍
Does 1-handed blade mean single handed opening? T’would be illegal here if so.

I am a huge fan of my Victorinox cybertool 34.
It has a bit wrench and bit holder which gets a huge amount of use.
Also has the standard Victorinox multi purpose can opener/bottle opener/flat head screwdriver pairs and excellent mini scissors. Along with typical double knives. You can get a larger version with saw and metal file, but I didn’t feel those were necessary for computer desk and laptop bag use.

I have a leatherman wave, I use it every day.
Don’t think you can carry it around though
-

Leatherman tools are definitely my favourite multitool and the Wave as suggested is about as good as any of them, but they have a locking blade, and that really limits their functionality as you can’t legally carry one anywhere unless you have a very specific reason to have a locking blade.
I would buy the blade less rebar as a multitool
And a pocket knife that’s legal to carry.
There are also loads of lovely traditional Sheffield knife makers with suitable pocket knives. they are relatively cheap but fine for most tasks and quite pleasing to use. -

excellent mini scissors
I do wish that letherman would sort that out. It's been quite a long time now, you'd think they could have found someone to make scissors at least close to Victorinox.

Actually this is probably the one: https://www.leatherman.com/free-p2-832636.html
That looks superb.

The Leatherman micro has good scissors, but only because you get scissors instead of pliers.
It’s the one that is always attached to my house and car keys.

Thought that carving knives are longer and smaller width of blade.
As an opinel fan I'd go for this and change the handle https://www.opinel.com/en/couteaux-de-cuisine/collection-parallele-manche-bois/n120-carving-knife-parallele

Is there a multitool which can cut brake cables cleanly? My SOG used to. The pliers have a sort of gearing to them. I should probably sharpen them. When I bought it, it seemed to be the only multitool which could do the job of a cable cutter. I tried a Leatherman but sent it back.

I like your definition of essential tools. 👍
99% of my use of tools is electrical.
Cut wires, trim wires, open electrical devices and plugs, close them.
A knife, pliers, medium/small screwdrivers both flat and cross... That's pretty much it... That's 99% of my use of a multi tool. And probably used a couple of times per month, sometimes as much as 5-10 times per month.
If I do anything else I take a toolbox.
I can see it may be useful to have done extra tools on it, but I'd rather have better and more usable pliers and screwdrivers.

I've ordered something...
A Leatherman Free P2 to be the multi-tool:
https://heinnie.com/leatherman-free-p2
And whilst I was there this looked nice...
An Opinel Les Forgés 1890 Paring Knife
https://heinnie.com/opinel-les-forges-1890-paring-knife/
Decent quality medium length knives are so damn useful in the kitchen and I only have one good one at the moment, and a couple of really old and cheap steak knives that I turn to when the good one is in use... so this one will help.
This was exactly my opinion, but I think he wants the grandeur of a carving-specific knife for meat. His old knife has an antler handle that I could definitely remove, but I think I’ll go for something new.
Do people even use carving knives anymore?
