The Radford/tannoy combo is as good as they bang on about. It really is.
That's a £50 preamp with a £10 Chromecast. Sounds ace

A couple of pages back, some folk mentioned Frugalhorn loudspeakers.
There's a whole website dedicated to plans for them if you want to go down the DIY route. I did a few years ago using modified Fostex FE126 drivers, still use them and think they're very very good.

The Chromecast audio really is the hifi bargain of all time.. streams 24/96 audio perfectly with functionality across all the apps I use... And has a decent dac contained within!

Yes! CA rule

Yes, except people now want $125 for them. You can build a really nice Volumio Pi based streamer for that - likely much less.

Pi Zero WH and hifiberry DAC+ Zero

Audio gold is awesome, would vouch for them

Wow - why are they so sought after?
Easiest, most discreet, cheapest, and highest performing way to get any music from anything else to come out of your existing stereo system.
I have two chromecast audios, and they both provide a way to get Spotify, Plex, etc to old stereo equipment.
Either as an analogue source, or as a digital source to a separate DAC.
And more, because it's a Google Chromecast thing it effortlessly works with things like Nest Hubs, so they can be set as default speakers for voice assistant, i.e. "hey Google play constant craving", the hub picks it up and Spotify is selected and the reply is "constant craving by k d Laing from Spotify playing on living room stereo".
All the old hi fi, suddenly becoming a modern and integrated part of the house for very very little money. You have to spend a pretty penny to jump the gap to the next level of devices that do this and those take more space and power near your amp.

However.. gapless playback
-
• #10336
Yeah. Sucks on that due to the way it works.
But for casual Spotify listening that's ok. Less likely to be listening to the albums where it matters, and more likely to listen to random playlists and song radios.

gapless playback
That’s where vinyl comes in… until side B

I’ve had my Cambridge audio bookshelf speakers for 15 years. I’m thinking it might be time to get some new ones. I’ve got quite a small living room, live in a terraced house and have a toddler so I can’t listen to music as loud as I used to/would like (thankful for headphones). I’ve seen good reviews I’d the wharefedale diamond 9.1 and 12.1 but was wondering if anyone had some first hand experience of the different in loudness. Essentially, my conundrum is do I need the more expensive ones.

Always yes! By definition. In fact, skip those and end up with B&O...

Far from a linear "correct" frequency response, but I reckon a pair of small book shelf speakers that are very detailed paired with a small sub might be a good option. You get the energy and a bit of room filling from the sub and the information from the bookshelves. You can also tune it to your needs, varying the two levels.
Or buy the 12.1s and use the loudness button on your amp.

I'm selling my speakers and amp:
https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/369874/£250 for an Arcam A65 plus with Monitor Audio Silver S8 floorstanders, and 7m of QED cable.
It's a "3 for the price of 2" type deal where it's all priced to sell it to someone on here that may appreciate them like I do. I'd rather do this than sell them to people who won't appreciate them.

I managed to pick myself up a chromecast audio for a very resonable price, very impressed. Wish I'd plumped for one ages ago!!
Transformed the sound out of my tannoys

I think I’m leaving towards the 3020i speakers now. I’ve read good things on this thread and elsewhere online.

Cool. The guy I bought my garrard off was onto a couple of crazy sp10 projects. Dual arm, massive plinth, the whole 9 yards.
Looking forward to seeing pics -

one of the joiners I had in recently was telling me how he has a LINN sondek LP12... picked up for the princely sum of 150£. surprisingly, he wouldn't accept my offer of 200£ for it

Mine actually the sl1000 MK2. It is in the factory 'obsidian' plinth and the technics epa100 tone arm. Quite rare as they were mostly sold as broadcast TTs.
