if you've got a good palate, it affects the whisky. I can identify it in blind tests and really can't tolerate it above a certain proportion. Mostly in the cheaper whiskies that use more of it.

Besides, I completely agree with the discerning palate, Bartoline meths is by far the finest methylated tipple and a very pleasing purple tint.
