Maybe get him one of these, can be used for thin slicing other stuff too like ham

Not an electric carving knife.
The one think that an electric carving knife is great for is cutting and shaping foam.

It is what opinel recommend when I had the problem.
EDIT: On a carbon steel blade, and just a drop. Says it here in the link https://www.opinel.com/en/opinel-and-me/tips/improve-the-opening-the-knife

Get him an electric carving knife, he’ll realise they are not very good eventually.
I mean, serrated knives for cutting meat shouldn’t be allowed, but I can understand why you might want one for sourdoughs with rock solid crusts.
Accidents with electric serrated knives are likely to be a lot worse than stabbing yourself lightly with a normal knife though.

Maybe I'll look into an alternative. My mum is extremely accident prone so perhaps having a miniature chainsaw lying around the kitchen is a bad idea anyway.

• #4232
Is there a go to brand or model?
-

They are a lot more common in Germany and then it's usually Graef but not sure if there is a UK equivalent.

I imagine someone using one to try and open a blister pack with harrowing results.

I have a moulinex, but is older than I am. My folkes got it as a wedding present. It was kept for best and only I used it.

This is going to come across as a bit strange, but if it is for cutting bread I have made one of these with the blade from a bow saw.

This is a thing

Are these good? I feel like he'd like it as an object and if it works better than an electric carving knife or a regular bread knife it might be a winner.
-

No idea. I've seen people evangelising about them but I don't own one so no idea whether they are as good as people make out.

I think they'd be terrific for reenacting Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Invent a dance like Leatherface at the end. Start at 2:53

The Japanese would go mad for it. Sell them some Leatherface outfits with dangly electric carving knives. Become a billionaire.

Interesting. I might ask Santa for one of these.

Could work, especially with the ability to tension the blade.
I made mine as I could only find US version not UK version. Had access to a scroll saw and wood so thought why not.
-
• #4244
I'll give one of these a go I think, thanks for the advice all!
-
• #4245
They’re a tad expensive for slicing bread though
-
• #4246
Maybe, but the saw has an asthetic that I find pleasing.
-
• #4247
It’s a thing of beauty.

Hey guys, could anyone recommend me a non-electric carving knife? Looking to replace my grandads antique set so it can definitely be ‘nice’ but not too spenny.
-
• #4249
My 2p.
A carving knife doesn't do a great deal more than a chef's knife 99% of the time, so I'd go for aesthetics as much as anything. So that's really down to your taste.
I'm guessing the blade it too worn away? Do you think you could remove the handle and replace it?

We have Tojiro Bread Slicer 235mm F-737 and its great.
Haha, "Tinder account for your mum" got a genuine laugh from me. He's got a nice set of knives already. I'm not sure why he wants an electric knife, he's getting on a bit so maybe he's starting to struggle cutting multiple loaves at a time? I'll have a word with my mum and see if that's what he really wants.
