Look at your brake rotors - the spokes are pushing for sound engineering reasons. Pulling spokes are trying to collapse the rim, which means buckling when it's a thin disc of material. Pushing spokes are trying to expand the rim, and you can't buckle something if it's in tension.

This is the beautiful crankset thread not the functional one, I think the pretty leaves flow, visually.
