Only thing I'd do different is to drill a hole at the end of the slot, I tried just slotting some stems when I started making them and found that they didn't nip up as well as ones with a hole at the end of the slot.
The post will be a different wall thickness than the tubing I was using though so maybe you'll be fine.
Possibly topical - just did a diy job on my seatpost after finally admitting defeat on the extended version. Chopped the top off, cut the slot, 1 x 27.2-27.9 mm cane creek shim, 1 x generic 31.8 mm seatpost clamp, 1 x old 27.2 mm seatpost, done in 15 mins :)
